Can I ask something regarding #Windows?
Occasionally I need Windows to run something that only runs on Windows (eg: software to patch a hobby transmitter for instance). My approach is to simply borrow a box for the task, but as far as I know Windows works without a license nowadays.
Is it common to use Windows unlicensed? I'm asking for a friend here of course.
@gpowerf So usual vitriol aside, yes, you can use an unverified/not activated Windows install semi-indefinitely. You get an annoying screen watermark and pop ups, but that's about it. Software will generally run.
Given Windows' forwards and backwards compatibility even a fairly outdated install will do for that stuff.
@gpowerf You can always download a virtual machine: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/virtual-machines/ and pass whatever port your hobby transmitter (or whatever you have connected) through the hypervisor to the Windows guest. They're good until the expiration date (currently November 07, 2023) and then you just grab a new one.
