a side point in this tweet: Greta Thunberg had to confirm that this is indeed her account on a different platform because #mastodon doesn't have a verification system. I am new here but this strikes me as a problem going forward.

@herid In Account settings > Profile > Appearance, any user can put their existing profile or website in Profile metadata, and link back to the #mastodon profile according to the instruction to verify the link. Public figures usually have some existing profile they can edit somewhere. A kind of outsourcing the verification.
That said, this is not as convenient as the Twitter checkmark since I have to click into a profile, then click through to an external website to actually check the verification.
