From what I've seen, the German AfD feels like a mix of the U.S. Republican Party and Marjorie Taylor Greene. A mix of conspiracy, populism, nationalism, anti-Ukraine, and scaremongering about minorities.

@olives You forgot anti-vax and climate change denial, or you might have seen that already as part of "like the Republicans". Anyway, you've got the right idea.

@kuroi_tengu Sounds like populism. People like this talk a bunch about "freedom", but then, they work to dismantle civil rights / human rights, and people end up with far less freedom.

@olives It is, by all means. Sadly, they seem to be dragging the 'merely conservative' CDU into the morass with them. It tries to woo its former clientele back from the right fringe by echoing the rethoric. Nothing good ever came from that, given the choice, people will always go for the original, i.e. AfD.
