I’ll be voting against the DUP in the upcoming local elections. Alliance will get my actual votes for choices 1 and 2. After that it’ll be 3, 4, etc for the other parties that aren’t the DUP. Or TUV obviously.

@ianRobinson not enough people (including myself, over the years, down South) understand tactical voting within proportional representation. One can’t help but wonder if they did, would things have been different?

@ianRobinson yes but how many people actually A) put any choices other than 1 and 2 and B) know how they are likely to be redistributed so as to vote tactically? I think there’s a huge amount of CBA as people won’t take the time to learn. I’ve been guilty of squandering my vote in the past because of this. It’s counter-intuitive to put down choices of candidates you don’t like because your favourite ones will receive their seconds. Also, very little feedback from party of choice in how to allocate 3s, 4s, and so on. They’re probably not allowed to say, right?

@ianRobinson nice 👍

@lavenderlens @ianRobinson I have a list of candidates who I feel should be at the bottom of the paper, and ones who should be at the top. I probably spend more time than is normal trying to determine the best order for the candidates in the middle!
In practice, I'm not sure if my vote has ever gone more than about two places down the ballot paper!

@lavenderlens Election leaflets here say the order to use in your hyper local ward. For their party only of course. So Alliance leaflets will tell me the best order to use.
