I don't think this is a "scam". Unless he lied to his customers or committed fraud somehow, it's not a scam. People make foolish purchases all the time. In fact, I think most businesses are built on selling stuff to people that they don't know how to create themselves, or don't have the time/resources to do themselves.

(TLDR; so maybe there's something else here that I'm not aware of.)
