I've followed the situation closely up until the the recent invasion. As you know, the first casualty of war is the truth, so there wasn't much sense in watching the news after the tanks rolled.
As to why it happened, there are a lot of moving parts, but the short answer is... oil.
The same reason for nearly every conflict since Vietnam.
