They're increasingly common where I live because the area mostly returned to forest after most of the old inefficient farms went belly-up in the 1930's, and that forest is starting to mature.

@Sphinx Black bears are quite scared of people, dogs, etc. Hence why this one (a relatively young one) went up a tree rather than deal with our dogs.
@Sphinx Even with black bears, you should be careful. And never go between a mother bear and her cubs.
