Sunday morning saw a major cloudburst and a glacier breach in the Indian Himalayas causing chaos as river up the stream get flooded with the glacier, which has broken up two hydroelectric dams in it's path and fears of further tragedies down the stream still remain.
150 feared to be dead till yet
@mur2501
😬😔
@mur2501 what the hell happened all of a sudden?
@seek
An avalanche on the Himalayas making all the rivers originating there to flood. These river are the sources for the Ganges river which is a very major river of South Asia
@mur2501 damn! how tragic. So does that mean even cities like Kolkata will be affected?
@seek
Kolkata is too much far away, The alert is in the immediate regions, towns and cities near the Himalayan foothills.
Though till yet no significant rise in water level is noted in the regions.
@mur2501 oohw I see hope soon everything will be under control .
@seek
It seems to be in control now as the water get's dispersed in the tributaries.
But it's still mysterious how did a glacier breach happened in winter 🤔
@floof-rocks
Glacier by definition is an ice flowing under it's own stress
Also glacier breach here refers to large water body contained in the glacier which outbursts when the glacier breaks.
@seek
@floof-rocks
I see
I also don't know for sure, different news channels saying different things ![]()
Though the latest one said that a big chunck of glacier broken from the main and fell into a lake or water body or something 🤔
@seek
@floof-rocks
Well whatever it was, it has cause a hell lot of chaos.
@mur2501 😰 That's horrible news. Best wishes to the search and rescue teams, and for those who will rebuild. 😰
@chiasm
They have only found 10 bodies till yet. Though the water is calm of the foothills of Himalayas so it seems the disaster wouldn't move on downstream much.
@mur2501 So tragic! I'm glad downstream will be spared, but the loss of power will be felt widely as well, I'm sure. ![]()
@chiasm
If it has reached the Ganges river then it would have been more then a tragedy as more then 500 million people live on the Ganga river basin ![]()
@mur2501 omg--that defies imagination. 😱
@mur2501 That is kind of... impressive. And terribly devastating. :/
@trinsec
It would have got more impressive if it would have breached more dams and reach the Ganga river basin on the plain which has a population of 500 million
@mur2501 Eh, that's not impressive, that's an outright disaster. :/
@trinsec
But if global warming continues that's what gonna happen ![]()
@mur2501 Yeah, I think so too. We're going to face some interesting challenges of our own here as well. Nobody's exempt from this and I bet Antarctica will become a tropical paradise.
@mur2501 (A tropical paradise 6 months of the year. The other 6 months will be freezing dark.)
Scientists still shocked as it is first time recorded that a glacier breached in middle of winter.
