Does the genre of tragedy exist for movies? Outside of Shakespeare adaptations, I can't think of any
@JamesHMcLaren oooh. Good catch! It's not the ragged tragedy of death, but something more bittersweet. But still with an unrecoverable loss, so the judges say "yes"
@nomi I can’t think of any others though, so I believe you’re correct.
@JamesHMcLaren oh man, we missed a big one. Million Dollar Baby
@nomi Right, d’oh!
@nomi Gone Baby Gone
@Rkfatheree haven't seen it, will have to add it to my list
@nomi Dr. Zhivago? One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? That's all I can think of right now.
@nomi American Beauty, Unforgiven, Sophie’s Choice come to mind immediately. I am a fan of tragedies. It may be that Hollywood doesn’t make so many now (feels like it’s all Marvel movies), but they do exist.
Vague spoilers for old movies
Stroszek (1977) is brutal, a personal favorite.
Requiem for a Dream (2000) sort of sets the standard.
American History X, just because of the downer ending
Don’t Look Now (1973), The Haunting of Julia (1977), and The Mist (2007) all probably qualify.
I’m sure there are others. Anime and martial arts and horror each have some legit tragedies.
Follow those trails! Have yourself the worlds most depressing movie marathon! 😢😂
@nomi Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind maybe?
