We have a computer lab manager whose office is in the bowels of a building where he gets no cell reception. We'd like a way to send him messages when something needs to be fixed in the lab.
What's a simple, free, platform-independent, non-corporate, internet-based messaging application?
@sideshow_jim Is that the name of an app, or a literal airhorn?
One of the faculty in that building has pet rats. I'm sure we could attach tiny strips of paper to them and train them to scurry through ducts...
@peterdrake no app, just an air horn!
I like the rats idea though, could convey a lot more info that way. Maybe train then to take micro SD cards
@peterdrake https://www.ekiga.org/ is an open source telephony app based on open protocols
SMTP (aka email)
@Pat @marcorobotics If he doesn't have notifications turned on, he might not see it for hours. If he does, his device would never stop screaming.
Maybe there's a way to set up notifications for only certain messages...

Yes, he could run a background process that sifts incoming emails for a specific string, and then have that process sound an alert.
In fact, I would not be surprised if some email clients already have that capability built in.
@peterdrake airhorn?
