the default pronoun in my writing that references an abstract programmer has been "she" for a while and i like that, but maybe i should make it a mix of "she" and "it" :3

@whitequark For abstract cases, the singular "they" works better (and seems more humanizing) as a neuter pronoun to my ear, but maybe it's a cultural thing.

It might be. My native tongue (Polish) has verbs that declinate by gender of subject. I think that makes me prefer picking different genders in setups where there's more than one participant (because it's more effective than in English at disambiguating them).
