I was at a discussion group about adding the next-generation UI to Urbit, that was open to anyone. Some poor guy made a suggestion for an idea, and a couple people completely shut him down very brusquely. The guy slinked off after a few minutes. The fact is that the idea was pretty not good and the discussion had limited time so it was totally the right thing to do, but I felt bad for him as it must have been pretty embarrassing.
Another guy came into the conversation (a good acquaintance of mine for a few years actually) and said what I think was the most definitive thing about the discussion that should have directed all further conversation. Everyone nodded their heads and the group did a "yes, but" and continued.

It wasn't a bad experience or anything, the discussion was great, just some funny observations.

Formally the discussion was about how the UI for Urbit is html+css+js and how can we use #Urbit for every part in the future, and what would that look like.

@Moon or to be more precise, this group sounds self absorbed

@skells I think it was trying to balance two mostly-incompatible things, group participation of users, and high level discussion of a future thing that pretty much only experienced software developers and people who have thought deeply on UI have the knowledge discuss.

@Moon begs the question why the second guy wasn't listened to, unless he was way off base

@skells There are more concerns than just technical ones so a lot of the discussion was more about what it should look like or how it should be exposed to the developer. So some of the reason was that people didn't want to hash out technical details, even though unfortunately those technical details very heavily direct what you can even do.

It was a very 10,000 feet discussion so it was all okay, I just think it would have been the best if it were a panel discussion with a few people heavily involved in the development though.
