Hmmmm, it will fail immediately if the I send qoto.org on twitter.

Several minutes ago I was introducing qoto to my friends on twitter, and it keeps failing.

@skyblond
I can't read that. What is the message? Have you tried contacting the admin?

@lucifargundam Not know Twitter has admin XD.

I said "qoto.org is fairly free, you can come here". By free, I mean it's not restrained as twitter, and the whole atmosphere is relaxed and free.

>> My apologies for any misunderstanding, I meant for you to ask the admin of Qoto.

>> I agree, Qoto does try to be 'free'. The main rule to keep in mind is to not harm other Qoto users.

@lucifargundam Oh... I think it's major related to Twitter, consider what Twitter does, and mastodon is a strong competitor. Some of my Chinese friends sensed a bit of censorship at that time and want to have an alternative platform for a safety backup (we met purely on the internet and did not share any info for safety reason, so it would be hard to re-find each other).

@skyblond I had a similar conversation with someone else recently. However it was not relative to Twitter.
"editing /etc/hosts resolves. as chinese we have rich enough experience  fighting with firewall :weibo_d_erha:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Fi "

@lucifargundam
Now editing hosts file won't help much. Now the great firewall has the ability to actively detect proxy servers and close the tcp connection. Some rumors said it also rebuild the TCB to track every connection. It's a involving black box and funded by the government. The proxy developers are funded by the eager for freedom.

The tech is not the most scary part. The change of mind is. When people has censorship in their mind, that's scary.

>> That's just the context of the previous conversation I had with the other individual. Apparently that was the solution they found to their problem :)

>> I've read of several holes in TGF(The Great Firewall). Some of those are actually inside government infrastructure- others through news media sources. When there's a will, there's a way. The hacker spirit is the same no matter what country you live in.

>> Many people would agree with you. Even those who do not know how to use computers well would agree as well. Distorting or hiding the truth can be more frightening than the way it's being portrayed.
