I can't stand Twitter these days, and while I have strong political views I'm not gonna waste energy in shouting matches. I'm here for STEM, and cool people. Which is everyone on this platform.
@ster A fair word of warning though, the mutual respect thing is only really guaranteed within QOTO. As a federated technology we also interact with the larger fediverse and not all instances are quite so mature. The nice thing is you will quickly learn which are the bad actors and which are not and can mute the instances that you dont like wholesale.
@freemo Something that I really enjoy about the fediverse is the freedom to explore its depths, its best and its worst. But as a community, even with a lot of anger and discontent, it's beautifully diverse and exciting to discover.
Really puts platforms like TikTok to shame who were exposed for culturing an environment of disgusting standards on appearance and wealth, and no one seems to care.
I hope one day the majority will demand open tech like the fediverse and *especially* communities like QOTO.
@ster Welcome Ster! :)
@ster Enjoy the network and all it has to offer. If you are new to using Mastodon, there's a good guide here: https://lifehacker.com/a-beginner-s-guide-to-mastodon-1828503235
We also have another new users guide, posted here : https://write.tedomum.net/rgx/suggestions-and-guidelines-for-new-users-written-by-mastodon-art-administrator
Casey Rollins made a video to explain the Fediverse, here :
"I made this video awhile back to help explain how the #Fediverse works."
@design_RG Thanks for the links. I'm not so much new, I've had this account but not been using it for over a year, and previously had accounts on other instances.
But I'll definitely check them out, since I've still plenty to learn!
@ster Ah, great -- the LifeHacker guide is the one that I learned the ropes from; and there's definitely things we need to understand to better use the Fediverse.
I am always looking for good guides, have read many; this LH one is tops.
@ster Thewn you will fit right in. Dont get me wrong we have plenty of political discussions and youll hear views from all ends of the spectrum here. but one thing that I can say im proud of about this community is we always have those discussions with a level of mutual respect. Its a nice change!
With that said, we are mostly about STEM and not politics :)
