Could Mastodon ever be the place where I can search for local events like "fire in Colorado" when I see smoke in order to find out what's going on? I'm not sure if hashtag search will work as well for that. This is one of the main things I have liked about the bird site.

@strawd the search bar does the same thing so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Wouldn’t that be more an issue of whether there’s enough people in your area using this platform? Which given that Elon keeps fucking Twitter up at some point there will be

@daeyoung @strawd Mastodon is heavily hashtag-driven, there's no plain text search (and there's a historical reason for that).
So, if someone's talking about a fire in colorado, they might want to hashtag colorado at least if they want to be discovered by others.

On top, we have public feeds where anyone can see their posts (unless it's marked as unlisted).

@trinsec @daeyoung that makes sense. You wouldn't find all relevant posts, just the ones whose authors wanted their post to be found. I guess that means we need most folks to make the mental shift towards opt-in searchability when writing posts.

@daeyoung the search bar doesn't do the same thing if I understand correctly. It only searches by hashtag. Perhaps that will drive people to use more hashtags - I suppose it did for me on this very question. Agreed that Elon is doing his darndest to drive folks over here. We'll have to wait and see if it becomes ubiquitous.

@strawd I see. I used to never use hashtag. I guess I'll have to get used to it
