There are many variations on this theme. I know in the TV series Rita, in the 4th season (I think) she (Rita) was in a classroom where her teacher also did some draconian take on the division of the class where one half was 'superior' to the other half.

And I'm sure I saw some other movie too with a similar (albeit not this extreme) concept.

I guess this is something that fascinates the human mind to no end.
