Could Mastodon ever be the place where I can search for local events like "fire in Colorado" when I see smoke in order to find out what's going on? I'm not sure if hashtag search will work as well for that. This is one of the main things I have liked about the bird site. #TwitterMigration #mastodonquestions
@daeyoung @strawd Mastodon is heavily hashtag-driven, there's no plain text search (and there's a historical reason for that).
So, if someone's talking about a fire in colorado, they might want to hashtag colorado at least if they want to be discovered by others.
On top, we have public feeds where anyone can see their posts (unless it's marked as unlisted).
@trinsec @daeyoung that makes sense. You wouldn't find all relevant posts, just the ones whose authors wanted their post to be found. I guess that means we need most folks to make the mental shift towards opt-in searchability when writing posts.
