Here's a #poll about when text in an image must, may or must not be transcribed for an #AltText or an #ImageDescription in the #Fediverse.

Definition:

"Legible" means it can be read in the image (sufficient letter height, not blurry, unobstructed).

"Illegible" means it can be seen as text, but it can't be fully read in the image (too small letter height and/or slightly blurry and/or partly obstructed).

"Invisible" means that it is so small that it can't be seen as text in the image (way sub-pixel letter height and/or very blurry). "Invisible" does not mean "fully outside the image" or "facing away from the on-looker".

"Yes" means one MUST transcribe it.

"Maybe" means one MAY transcribe it.

"No" means one MUST NOT transcribe it.

Example:

"Legible: yes; illegible: maybe; invisible: no" means:

If you can read it in the picture, you must transcribe it.

If it can't be read, but there's still clearly text visible, feel free to transcribe it, but it isn't mandatory.

If text is so tiny and/or blurry that it can't be seen as text, don't transcribe it under any circumstances.

Warning:

"Always transcribe everything" means that if there's a newspaper stand somewhere in your picture, you must fully transcribe all frontpages of all newspapers of which the frontpages face the on-looker all the way down to the fold. This is nigh-impossible unless you have also taken close-up photographs of all newspapers.

Exception:

If a transcription compromises someone's privacy, the text must not be transcribed, at least not fully and literally.

It really comes down to something like artist’s intent.

It comes down to what the poster intends their post to be like.
