It strikes me that this is a great example of the utility of quote-tweets (whatever you want to call them) that #Mastodon developers have refused to implement, talking as if they would bring social media to its knees.
In reality, they have real practical use that can't be duplicated through other means, and they help head off complaints like this one.
@volkris Kind of, but I'm talking about a situation that started with a direct reply to a post and has since branched off.
For instance, when I went to reply to you just now, it auto-included feditips, presumably because your post included them, presumably because my post mentioned them. But does feditips want our entire conversation notifying them? Probably not. One of us can always choose to remove that mention when writing a reply, but I wonder if 'reply-all' by default maybe isn't the best solution.
