Long thread/21

If you want a small government, you need small corporations - need to block the anticompetitive mergers and predatory conduct that lets companies grow so large that they can fit their regulators into the little change pocket in their blue-jeans.

@toxtethogrady @kissane what’s showing up on a poll is their resentment of Weather Channel feature programs frequently mentioning climate change. “How to Survive Extreme Flash Floods! … which will be a growing danger in this age of increasing dangerous storms from a warming globe. Scientists predict that by 2040…” etc. Their lineup has a lot more than just the regular forecast.

(I dated a guy who watched a lot of WC shows for fun.)

Maybe I’ve overlooked analysis on this, but it seems like media commentators and the center-left press are missing something critical about the revelations of Fox News’s duplicity, which is that a ton (most, I suspect) of GOP viewers already believe that this is how all mainstream media works.

They already believe that all big media orgs intentionally distort the truth. Nearly half of Republican viewers don’t even trust the Weather Channel.

It is a very careful, limited statement. Mild pushback. But Tucker Carlson felt panic over it, and demanded her head.

This kind of behavior exposes a weakness for Fox.

Keepers of a resentment machine— for that is what Fox is — may suddenly find the resentment coming straight for them. 5/

Beinart notes that "there was a remarkably kind of, I would say, condescending and dismissive response to him. So, he was thrown under the bus by leading members of his own Democratic party."

This is true. And it had a lot to do with the fact that Jimmy Carter is a Southerner, a white Southerner who is not easy to pigeonhole as a stereotypical racist bigot, who was dismissed by the "liberal" establishment soley due to his cultural origins.

@wdlindsy deeply religious, too. His faith wasn’t a checkmark that could be discreetly stored away until needed; it shone through his whole life.

@gregpak I’ve heard several people call the chatbot “spicy autocorrect.”

No one:

Corporations, Publishers: [discreet changes no one asked for]

No one:

Corporations, Publishers: [outrageous/ridiculous changes no one asked for]

Public: What?! This is an outrage! This is ridiculous! This goes to show how people I don’t like are RUINING EVERYTHING! There goes my childhood! There goes common sense! I’m going to rant about how special the product was the way it WAS!

Public: Wow, yeah, it really was special. Let’s buy it!

Corporations, Publishers: $$$$$

@ringo right now the excess CO2 in the ocean is increasing its acidity, to the detriment of ocean life in general and shellfish in particular. Still confused how bringing it back to its more natural state would be a bad thing, as, despite the hyperbole of the response, nothing about the described intervention implies we’d take all or too much of the CO2, just the extra build up. As fun as it to feel smarter than MIT scientists, just maaybe they’ve also heard of photosynthesis?

People that have had the same sociopolitical views all their lives, and only associated closely with people who share those views, are so incredibly bad at recognizing . Nobody is as humorless as those who only understand one point of view and are proud of it. Irrespective of how correct their views are, they are fundamentally stunted in their grasp of the human aspect of that issue, and, ultimately, will also be poor advocates of it.

The robots aren't taking over. They're not falling in love. They're not feeling. They don't want to be alive. They're not evil masterminds. They create word patterns based off text on the internet. Is what journalists should be saying, not gee-whiz sci-fi LARPing about fancy autocorrect.
