@Teri_Kanefield I think there’s also an important aspect to *the appearance of fighting*. That’s what his base craves, what makes him a hero to them— that he doesn’t pass on any chance to make noise and fight his enemies, no matter how useless it is or how stupid he looks. To them, that equals bravery and determination. He is performing defiance for them, and keeping his name in the news. They won’t hear the “corrupt” opinion of experts or judges about the moves anyway.

Please stop acting like arming teachers is the answer. You don't even trust us to pick out books for your children.

I said I'd logged off for the night but I'm logging back on to share the news that in less than 12 hours we hit $100,000 to support the Texas Observer team. Here's an update from @jamescanup (former fundraiser for TXO) on why we are increasing the goal to $200K in the hopes it will convince the board to keep our doors open.

We're so immensely grateful to everyone who has donated or shared already. 🤠gofundme.com/f/laid-off-texas-

@mmasnick iirc, “adjustments” indicate your insurance was able to negotiate the total down from the sticker price. They should be the difference between the full amount of the bill your provider was hoping to get and the amount they are able to bill for, that amount your insurance company is paying + your contribution.

E.g. $5k gross total: if per the agreements between the insurance company and provider they pay $3500 and you pay $500, then that means $1k is “adjusted” away.

Word of the Day: Phytoremediation

This refers to using plants to clean up contaminated environments (eg. oil spills).

I recently came across an interview with Dr Eucharia Nwaichi, a biochemist working with local communities in the Niger Delta region, planting lemongrass & rubber to clean toxins from contaminated soils.

OK, :fediverse: #Fediverse hive-mind. I'm working on #TwitterMigration research on higher reach individuals on Twitter that have already migrated to the Fediverse, and have not left #Twitter... at least not yet.

Am looking for accounts on Twitter that have about 500K followers and higher and are also here.

▶️ Am I missing any accounts?

Boost this around to help share it, want to make this as complete as I can. Thanks

You know a magazine profile is going to be really on point when the author starts by making fun of the subject's clothes, religion, and the food they eat. Yep I'm being extremely sarcastic and yep I'm subtooting.

@darnell @muskanity the Hersh narrative has been thoroughly debunked, although that by no means rules out the US being the cause. It seems to still be an open question, and the US is high if not at the top of the suspect list. It’s even possible that Hersh was strung along with bullshit specifically to ultimately discredit accusations against us; we’ve pulled that kind of stunt before. But I wouldn’t bother citing his report to clear Ukraine.

Bandage that stops bleeding in one minute! An "anti-bleeding" fabric made from shrimp shells is saving thousands of lives in Ukraine. The bandages are coated with chitosan from shrimps that can stem bleeding by forming clots.

@maxleibman a worldwide pandemic does much to refocus one’s priorities— not to mention, reveal who prioritizes your safety and wellbeing in turn.

For example, companies that demand I come back to the office for no reason could’ve had a bigger slice of my energy just by not asking me to sit in traffic for hours each day— doesn’t get more win-win than that. I’d at least feel much more guilty for using extra time at work to write and design a new fairytale for my daughter. 🤷‍♀️

@maxleibman now re-word placing the blame where it belongs.

If only thinking inside the box is valued by the employer, or rather, that’s all that’s compensated as if it has value, should we side w the employer demanding unpaid labor or the employee who demonstably can and will innovate under the right conditions and will gladly cut a fair bargain for them?

Perhaps employees are volunteering creative energy elsewhere in their lives, rather than for corps. Art, family, writing.

@steverocky @Wifiwits @ktdoggett because what you’re not getting is that the mechanism of bone healing is the same in survivable breaks— say an arm or rib or finger— as a femur break. You benefit from ANY bones healing, then you can evolve the ability and once your body learns it, automatically regens all bones since it’s all the same material to your biochemistry. Your narrow focus on just femurs has inadvertently created a logical trap for yourself.

#BigTech #Layoffs #Capitalism: "These layoffs have nothing to do with "trimming the fat" or correcting the hiring excesses of the lockdown. They're a project to transfer value from workers, customers and users to shareholders. Google's layoff of 12,000 workers followed fast on the heels of gargantuan stock buyback where the company pissed away enough money to pay those 12,000 salaries…for the next 27 years.

The equation is simple: the more companies invest in maintenance, research, development, moderation, anti-fraud, customer service and all the other essential functions of the business, the less money there is to remit to people who do nothing and own everything."

Ed Pilkington notes that as public confidence in the Supreme Court falls to record lows — 40% now — the Supremes have quite the ethics problem on their hands, but are not addressing it:

"The chief justice, John Roberts, has insisted that the top court has no need to adopt an ethics code because 'every justice seeks to follow high ethical standards'."

Ok experts, is there a reason there are some accounts I can like but not ret- uh, boost? For example, I convinced a great Twitter follow to start posting on here again but now I can’t promote all his toots anyway, only star them. And I’ve run into it a few times on other accounts, as well. Is it a particular setting or what?
