The GNU Boot people actually sent me a cease and desist email, citing trademark infringement. Amazing.

Despite the original site clearly stating that it's unofficial. I literally made it to help them. You know, to help them use newer Libreboot because they use old Libreboot and even older coreboot.

Anyway, I complied with their polite request and have renamed the project to non-GeNUine Boot. The release archive is re-compiling.

Personally, I like the new name better.

Reddit users figured out that some bot crawlers scrape popular threads and auto-generate AI articles based on user comments, so they decided to create some fake hype to confuse them.

It worked.

This is why real journalism matters.

Like, I get it - if you're like me you've spent a ton of time getting decent at a craft and then to see an AI do it is upsetting. But if you'd told me in the abstract "in the year 2030 or so, you'll be able to make a feature film in your basement" I'd be in favor of it at almost any cost!

I owe you all the deepest and sincerest apology. It has been brought to my attention that my facts are enabling fascism and destroying democracy. I am especially sorry for the harmful facts stating that:

-Every month is National Potato Month.
-George W. Bush has a Foo Fighters tattoo on his back.
-Optimus Prime is the only heterosexual Transformer.
-The Lord of the Rings was filmed in New York City.
-Cher’s full name is Chernobyl.

I pray that you can all find it in your hearts to forgive me.

@moffintosh so apparently the default .sort() compares UTF-16 code units. It will not only sort -2 before -7, it will also sort 10 before 9. Truly cursed stuff.

@andersgo don't get me started on how "colonel" is pronounced "kernel"

I'd like to see someone suss out the data on the number of pedestrian collisions that are occurring over time, but I can't find it easily.

Deaths are obviously going up, and I'm not arguing that a larger car isn't more dangerous to pedestrians and other road users (they most certainly are).

But... I'm almost certain pedestrian impacts have gone up, making you more likely to be hit in the first place. That's important and that matters to the discussion.

I am once again asking that documentation is published in not just video form.

Spam sucks.

We built the best spam detection system in the fediverse, using a combination of machine learning and behavioural analysis!

Best part is that this doesn't depend on any 3rd party service or API, and you can share/import training data.

Sometimes the most magical features are those we don't see 😎

it's fun when you look up software in github and it's like "latest commit: yesterday" and then you scroll down and some of the files have like, "last modified: 20 years ago"

THAT'S OLDER THAN GITHUB. THAT'S OLDER THAN GIT

Literally just asking ChatGPT to classify a text document gets 58.7% accuracy (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/370594216_ChatGraph_Interpretable_Text_Classification_by_Converting_ChatGPT_Knowledge_to_Graphs)

Gzip gets 68.5% (https://mastodon.social/@mhoye/110707564773784439)

On one hand, that's definitely misusing ChatGPT.
On the other hand, that's also definitely misusing Gzip.

If "Artificial General Intelligence" means "able to do tasks it was never designed for", then I, for one, welcome our Gzip overlords

Holy _shit_ this paper, and the insight behind it.

You know how every receiver is also a transmitter, _well_: every text predictor is also text compressor, and vice-versa.

You can outperform massive neural networks running millions of parameters, with a novel applications of _gzip_.

misconceptions programmers have about names:

1. everyone has a name
2. names are only in the ASCII character set
3. all names are pronounceable
4. evoking the true name of your enemy does not give you power over them
5. no one would ever name their child after a star wars character
