A key sign of how broken CS/AI/ML #PhD programs is when there is an *unspoken* requirement that if you want to be competitive, you need to published already.

I mentor at least 5-10 PhD applicants every year, esp from the Global South/Majority World.

One super talented applicant asked me: "Isn't the PhD supposed to be the training to learn how to publish & be a good scientist?"

I wish I had a better answer than the one I gave her.

In many ways I'm still very much a man of the 20th C. When I refer to the 'turn of the century' I still mean the turn from the 19th to the 20th. A romantic part of me is still waiting for the (by now broken) promises of the 20th C to be fulfilled. We once so keenly believed in the idea of a utopian future. When I was a child, I'd try to imagine the technological/ social advancements we might make by the year 2000. Where are they? Where did the future go, and why did we abandon it?

Bewilligungschancen liegen bei den Anträgen irgendwo zwischen 10 und ~30%. Kommt SEHR drauf an.

Also, um es nochmal zu schreiben: 70-90% der Anträge, in die SEHR VIEL Zeit geflossen sind, werden abgelehnt.

Erst jetzt, wo ich hier ständig Posts darüber lese, dass Mastodon keine Algorithmen hat, die uns häufig gefavte Posts, ältere Posts von Followings, thematisch relevante Posts usw. anzeigen, wird mir klar, dass es tatsächlich Leute gibt, die auf Twitter die Home-Timeline statt der chronologischen Timeline verwendet haben. Kein Shade, es wundert mich nur.

Offenbar kam unser Anzeigentext "Wir testen nur mal das Werbedings, weil wir Elon Musk ärgern wollen." bei Twitter nicht gut an. Die Anzeige wurde nicht nur abgelehnt, sondern der Postillon auch noch komplett für Twitter Ads gesperrt wegen ...

Ich bin gespannt auf die kommende Zeit auf #Mastodon! Auf #Twitter ist es (mir zumindest) praktisch nicht mehr möglich, selbst sachliche Themen zu posten, ohne dass eine Lawine an beleidigenden Kommentaren kommt oder solche, die fake news verbreiten. Tweets ohne Antwortfunktion sind auch nicht die Lösung. Also ab jetzt lieber hier!
