While doing some mindless work, I kept half an eye on the 1944 film, "Storm Over Lisbon." It's not great art, and most people regard it as a less than successfull "Casablanca" ripoff.

BUT it does give me the opportunity to share an anecdote about the star Vera Ralston. A Czech skating champion, born Věra Helena Hrubá, she told off #Hitler at the 1936 #Olympics. So there.

Current curmudgeon level: slightly irritated to see people referring to the differences between elements of an integer sequence as "derivatives"

A bedraggled woman enters a fancy restaurant. "I'm so hungry please..." she says, and she is so thin and sad seeming the head waiter feels bad and sits her at a table in the break room bringing her some dinner rolls with butter and that day's stew.

She looks at the food, as if in disbelief. Then she looks up at the head waiter "You don't ... have any steak or caviar or anything? Maybe some scampi in butter?" She says.

Seriously, --nobody has absolute control over which page any given reader has the power to begin at, so how about you index each time you've used the word "meanwhile" to refer to multiple concurrent events in your story's "timeline"; timelines exist to establish sequence of events and "meanwhile" indicates an event that is necessarily NOT subsequent to the previous event but is instead concurrent. Same condition exists when you use the term "previously".

Then consider the nuanced differences between "time" and "timing".

Now go write.

I ran across an odd image just a few ago, with the hashtag and, primarily, it's odd because it's formulaic, and nowhere is listed "know your audience". Not everyone that reads such fare is hoping for identically styled material.

There is no recognition of the fact that, regarding physics, a book is a time travel device itself where you can begin at the end, skip to the beginning, and randomly access any point in the middle....which is how time travel operates, and time is NOT linear either.

And yet it forces story-line linearity when you start at the first page and read sequentially until arriving at the last page.

There are authors out there who have already utilized the physics of how a book works via those "choose an ending" type stories, however limited in use those might be, but it's a start.

The White House on Wednesday announced $4.8 billion in student debt relief for some 80,300 people.

That brings the total approved student debt cancellation by the Biden administration to $132 billion for more than 3.6 million Americans.
