The Nobel Sweetiepoo Prize

...for the young girl who was most compelling at the ceremony with her plaintive call to "Please stop! I'm BORED!"

This is an utter disgrace: About 200 members of Afghan special forces, trained and funded by the UK, face imminent deportation to their Taliban-controlled homeland, the BBC has learned.

Now it appears the economics have changed so that one can buy a generic circuit board that has multiple footprints for the CRT socket, and multiple taps to support different magnetics.

It’s probably an odd effect of the world being down to only a handful of CRT manufacturing plants and low demand for long enough that a degree of generic compatibility has come to a design space that lacked it previously.

The main thing that makes it so mind-blowing is that back in their heyday, these devices were sold in such high volumes that every model was like a special snowflake custom-engineered for a different CRT picture tube and yoke.

CRTs had 20 alphanumeric character model numbers and you never saw the same one twice, different voltages and pinouts, etc. The coils on the yokes had different inductances and energy requirements.

It’s hard to convey just how radical and mind blowing this board swap is to younger folks who never knew the joys* of repairing consumer CRT TV’s.

As expected, Trump wants to halt all proceedings in the DC district court while his interlocutory appeal on absolute immunity is pending.

What's an interlocutory appeal? See:

A question has been: Will this interfere with the March 4 trial: Unlikely because of how quickly the appellate court turned around the gag order appeal, and that the appellate court has stated it is committed to not delaying the trial.

The DOJ responded to Trump's motion. . .

"Scopus, a widely used database of scientific papers operated by publishing giant Elsevier, plays an important role as an arbiter of scholarly legitimacy... But users beware, a new study warns. As of September, the database listed 67 “hijacked” journals—legitimate publications taken over by unscrupulous operators to make an illicit profit by charging authors fees of up to $1000 per paper. For some of those journals, Scopus had listed hundreds of papers."
