Well guess what? My retired-IT-director hubby (who also serves as my in house technical support staff) is setting me up with my own server.

I am tech-aware but not technical, at least not in the modern sense. I can program in C++, #scheme, & #fortran , and I administered a Wordpress site a decade ago. So what I say is not very deep.
I know the hyphens improve the name law-and-politics.online BUT they will cause you serious frustration for the followers for remembering it. Much better would be LawAndPolitics.online .
Invest in both domain names to prevent malicious domain squatting.
