📢New on the Node: Uncovering non-canonical functions of the Hippo pathway
Check out the #behindthepaper story by Heya Zhao revealing the role of Hippo pathway in cell fate decisions of the #drosophila eye:
Brilliant new paper by Naomi #Oreskes, concluding that "our overall situation suggests that it does not suffice for scientists simply to supply #factual #information, and leave it at that. Scientists need as well to engage actively with the recipients of that information." https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s43538-022-00121-1
We're excited to announce a new scheme aimed at supporting postdocs as they go on the job market. Our 'Pathway to Independence' programme will provide mentorship, support and networking opportunities to a group of researchers transitioning to independence.

PSA: #FlyBase just came out with an update where nomenclature for genes with ambiguous names (e.g. dl vs. Dl) was changed to avoid confusion. So Dl is now "Delta", while dorsal remains "dl". I suspect it may take some time for the field to absorb these changes.

“Be respectful, and take your roles in organizing these sessions seriously,” writes @gwendoesscience in @Nature. “Publicly reliving our trauma to satisfy your (equity, diversity and inclusion) obligations is not our job.” https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-04147-9
To obtain enough live cells from #Drosophila melanogaster eye-antennal imaginal discs for 10X #scRNAseq, we combined mechanical and chemical dissociation. scRNAseq showed that the protocol captured most relevant cell types. 2/8

🗓️ Save the date! Next Friday 2nd December at 11am UTC, we'll be hosting a free online panel discussion examining the outcomes of #COP27. We have an exciting line-up of speakers! Registration link to follow soon.
We have an exceptional opportunity at our center for a new group leader at VIB in Leuven. We are looking for a new colleague who wants to use computational methods to investigate molecular and/or cellular aspects of neurobiology. This position not only comes with substantial and renewable core funding and start-up package, but it is also linked to a tenure track position at KU Leuven.
More information on our center can be found on our website https://cbd.sites.vib.be/en.

New cytosine base editors!

(Another by Nicole Gaudelli's team apparently coming soon.)
Why care:
Base editors can install predictable gene edits without DNA breaks. The described C-to-T editors are as efficient at current tools, but create less off-target damage in the genome and are smaller, which helps with delivery in vivo.
