Thank you for explaining why there is more to moderation than just keeping people from seeing things they "don't want to see" --

By making the largest and most popular network one that is able to effectively reject such content it can be pushed to the dark corners of the web where it belongs.

This can't be automated. It means looking case by case, making tools to help moderators and admins share information and co-ordinate actions. That's what I'm most interested in.

There is nothing old, stable, or consolidated about multiracial, pluralistic democracy in America. It only started less than 60 years ago, and the conflict over whether or not it should be allowed to endure and prosper has dominated politics ever since. 26/

Some photos from this morning’s walk. I think there are some on the twig with the droplet of water. The one with a knot and lateral twig extending from the main trunk looks like an ancient, rheumy eyed salamander with growing along it’s body. Also, an above and below shot of a cluster of fungi.

Phil Ting's #FreedomToWalk Act is now law in California. You can cross the street anywhere as long as you're not creating a hazard.

#Jaywalking, the fake "crime" created by automobile industry lobbying to blame victims of #TrafficViolence, no longer exists in California.

Enjoy your freedom to walk! ktla.com/news/california/new-l

Living wages. Powerful unions. Pro-worker laws on the books. We’re going to fight to make it happen in 2023. A world where workers have real power is still attainable.

@mguhlin @edutooter @edutooters I strongly agree with the issue of reading w/o knowledge and vocabulary, but would add science to social studies. Sadly, many children live in environments that are too content free. While others are exposed to very rich environments at a young age. Too many teachers merely observe what they see and don't take or do not have the time and capacity to take differences in intellectual backgrounds into account.

A Moral Rating Agency report shows that there are plenty of well-known corporations still in #Russia. Some have not moved out at all, while others have decided to quit some activities but not others.

I am a computational chemist studying biomolecular chemistry and photochemistry. I really enjoy working on problems related to the origins of life and prebiotic chemistry. My most recent research articles focused on the photostability and photochemistry of RNA/DNA building blocks and precursors, electron transfer properties of DNA/RNA, as well as self-repair of DNA lesions. Nudge theory in action. £20 Waterstones Christmas gift card burning a hole in my pocket no longer. and definitely had an influence with these two ‘impulse’ buys today.

The Physics of Fizz

If an estimated 360 million glasses of champagne or sparkling wine are consumed on New Year’s Eve, how many bubbles would they release? For #ScienceSunday, let’s turn to physics for the answer. 🧵

It’s a Gas! Did you know that an uncorked bottle of champagne can release 6 times its volume of CO2! This gas is generated in a 2nd fermentation by adding sugar and yeast to blended wine. The sugar breaks down to ethanol (alcohol) and carbon dioxide. C6H12O6 —> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2

@gerrymcgovern Or simply technology more wisely applied. Certainly the advent of fossil fuel use and the industrial revolution gave rise to soaring climatic impacts, but every technical advance by humans has driven serious ecosystem impacts. There are no mastodons, and the Fertile Crescent isn't very fertile anymore.

@gerrymcgovern Typical of mainstream media to frame this as an all or nothing proposition, when even the interviews and statistics suggest much more nuance. Much more about using technology in a healthier more socially aware manner. Perhaps not a message that NYT wants to convey?

I thought it might be time for #introductions again.

In 2023, I will write a book.

This is not so much a "New Year's resolution" as an "actual contract." (1/n)

@Blackfist

This is the post that blocked on c.im for being *about* racism.

It's a really nice post, relatable. Ironically enough it's about how one can feel left out-- even when those making it happen might not be aware of what they are doing.

This isn't the first time this kind of misguided block has occurred on this server.

Check your friends and let them know, it's just not a place where this is welcome.

(I reached out to the admin, no response.)

This should be interesting for #FrontRange #Colorado #AirQuality research. I wonder if the improvement will be significant.

Anyone know which charts and data to watch?
