This points to an emerging paradox in media reporting on disasters that's become really apparent in recent years: the more severe the damage, the less news initially makes it out (because power is out and telecoms are down) and the less coverage they receive.

“While the history of racial covenants has been well-documented, urban planners and historians say plotting them on a map — neighborhood by neighborhood and, in some cases, parcel by parcel — lays bare the extent of discrimination in stark and often surprising ways.”

Quoting Tamar Kohn (@VirusExplorers) about their new paper: "#Aerosol acidification important for inactivation of #airborne #Influenza & #SARSCoV2. Unintentional removal of acids & elevated NH3 levels indoors may prolong virus persistence. Overlooked role of #pH important for #virus transmission & mitigation."
We're slowly inching toward a mechanistic understanding of virus inactivation in aerosols.

Kroger projects $4.9 billion in profits in 2022.
Now it's purchasing Albertons, the second largest grocery store chain, for $25 billion.
Albertsons previously acquired Safeway for $9.2 billion.
Why are grocery prices up? Grocery store goliaths are buying the competition.
And thus the tradeoff - if we *don't* have a bad year, we need to hold some of that water back in storage to protect us against the next bad year. So crushing cuts either way.
Working on my comments for Interior's #ColoradoRiver Supplemental EIS - the "how do we save the Colorado" plan - I'm struck by how crushing the water cuts have to be if we have one or two more bad years.
#Introduction Another rat swimming over from the sinking ship. I am retired #museum person who takes #photos on my walks, enjoying #nature even more now that it's not a 9-5 job.

I was reading interviews of Katalin Karikó, who made key discoveries that led to the development of lifesaving mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. Her dedication in the midst of adversity struck me.
-She pushed on despite not having job security, NIH R01 research funding, or recognition.
-A chance stop in Mainz led to her joining BioNTech.
-And her daughter is a two-time Olympic gold medalist!
More talk of dedicated scientists, less talk of narcissistic businessmen please.

*Sheepish request* I'm new to Mastodon, but a lot of my former Twitter followers don't know I'm here yet. Someone suggested I could simply ask you fine people to boost me. Would you be so kind? (I promise to post a photo of my dog to say thanks). #WelcomeToMastodon

Rosalind Franklin’s research was crucial to discovering DNA’s double helix structure 🧬 but it was James Watson & Francis Crick who received the credit & Nobel Prize.
Unknown to Franklin, the pair saw her unpublished data & X-ray diffraction images, inspiring their famous model. They never acknowledged her contribution until after her death.
How many discoveries & innovations of #women do we attribute to the men who took credit for their ideas?
