"The homes or offices of five elected Democratic officials in #NewMexico, including the new attorney general, have been hit by #gunfire over the past month, and authorities are working to determine if the attacks are connected."#news
Since Jan. 6, 2021, Fortune 500 companies — some of whom pledged to withdraw support from candidates who denied the results of the 2020 election — have given nearly $15.8 million to election deniers.
Look up how much they've given and to whom:
"We must pass a federal voting rights bill...that fight must continue in the new Congress — and if we have to scrap the filibuster to get it done, we absolutely should do that. No Senate rule is more important than our democracy." -Sen. @JohnFetterman@twitter.com

France is mandating clean air in the classrooms, requiring CO2 levels of 800 ppm. I hope this is rolled out in other countries. Apart from lowering #covid risks in the classroom, it will also address other respiratory issues. #CleanAir #COVID #SafeSchools
Do you know who Cheryl Johnson is? You should. Ms. Johnson is the Clerk of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. In lieu of an elected Speaker of the House, she is in charge. This is the first time a black woman has been the presiding officer of the U.S. House of Representatives. Let's hope it takes two years for the Republicans to pick their 'speaker'.
"The state’s interference limits the freedom of professors who are experts in their fields to decide what to teach their students. Cox worried, not without reason, that the law effectively banned him from discussing his ideas in class, and that teaching the courses could cost him his livelihood."
"Cox, who is the only Black professor in the sociology department, will not be considered for tenure until this fall."
Since it’s the new year, I figure an #introduction is in order. My name is Taylor, and I’m entering my final year as a #CompBio PhD candidate at Cornell.
My research is primarily focused on using #ML to understand #regulation of gene expression in grasses. I am particularly interested in #representation and #mechanistic modeling.
My other interests include science in the media, supporting Black scientists, and trivia podcasts.
I hope to have some great discussions on here!

Thank you for explaining why there is more to moderation than just keeping people from seeing things they "don't want to see" --
By making the largest and most popular network one that is able to effectively reject such content it can be pushed to the dark corners of the web where it belongs.
This can't be automated. It means looking case by case, making tools to help moderators and admins share information and co-ordinate actions. That's what I'm most interested in.
There is nothing old, stable, or consolidated about multiracial, pluralistic democracy in America. It only started less than 60 years ago, and the conflict over whether or not it should be allowed to endure and prosper has dominated politics ever since. 26/
Some photos from this morning’s walk. I think there are some #liverworts on the twig with the droplet of water. The one with a knot and lateral twig extending from the main trunk looks like an ancient, rheumy eyed salamander with #fungi growing along it’s body. Also, an above and below shot of a cluster of fungi.
Phil Ting's #FreedomToWalk Act is now law in California. You can cross the street anywhere as long as you're not creating a hazard.
#Jaywalking, the fake "crime" created by automobile industry lobbying to blame victims of #TrafficViolence, no longer exists in California.
Enjoy your freedom to walk! https://ktla.com/news/california/new-law-allows-californians-to-legally-jaywalk/

A Moral Rating Agency report shows that there are plenty of well-known corporations still in #Russia. Some have not moved out at all, while others have decided to quit some activities but not others.
I am a computational chemist studying biomolecular chemistry and photochemistry. I really enjoy working on problems related to the origins of life and prebiotic chemistry. My most recent research articles focused on the photostability and photochemistry of RNA/DNA building blocks and precursors, electron transfer properties of DNA/RNA, as well as self-repair of DNA lesions. See for example:

If an estimated 360 million glasses of champagne or sparkling wine are consumed on New Year’s Eve, how many bubbles would they release? For #ScienceSunday, let’s turn to physics for the answer. 🧵
It’s a Gas! Did you know that an uncorked bottle of champagne can release 6 times its volume of CO2! This gas is generated in a 2nd fermentation by adding sugar and yeast to blended wine. The sugar breaks down to ethanol (alcohol) and carbon dioxide. C6H12O6 —> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
