For the first time, the US is aiming to increase safety of people *outside* the vehicle.

This encourages active transportation.
Also, smaller vehicles use less energy.

"If enacted, automakers will have to test their vehicles using crash test dummies representing adult and child pedestrians for the first time. NHTSA says the changes could save up to 67 lives every year."

The entire story here is "my neighbor's friend's acquaintance's cat went missing" with about 3 feet of racist frosting on top. Just the absolutely dumbest racist shit I've ever seen.

CarMax partner Exeter Finance makes high-interest loans to people with troubled financial histories.

It allows borrowers to skip payments but often adds thousands of dollars in new charges — costs that customers say Exeter didn’t tell them about.

Donald Trump on 9/11

His reaction? To brag that his building, 40 Wall Street, was once again the tallest building in lower Manhattan after the Twin Towers fell.

Absolutely sick. And weird. And un-American.

‘Something every woman watching the debate probably noticed: Trump could not bring himself to say the name of the serving vice president, his opponent for the presidency. For him, Harris was just a pronoun: a nameless, identity-less “she,” “her,” “you.” … Harris bruised his feelings, and Trump reacted by shutting his eyes and pretending that Harris had no existence of her own independent of President Joe Biden, whose name Trump was somehow able to speak.’ David Frum theatlantic.com/politics/archi

New op-ed from Public Knowledge in MIT Technology Review:

"This decision harms libraries. It locks them into an e-book ecosystem designed to extract as much money as possible while harvesting (and reselling) reader data en masse."

Why a ruling against the Internet Archive threatens the future of America’s libraries: technologyreview.com/2024/09/1

Publicly declaring "I will give you a child" to someone you have no consenting relationship with is a threat of sexual assault, full stop.

Another great Philly Inquirer editorial: "For perhaps the first time, many Americans saw there was nothing there but a deranged, old man. Harris delivered a master class in how to take down a bully. She pummeled Trump and put him in short pants. And she did it with style and substance."

The #NYPD Is Tossing Out Hundreds of Misconduct Cases — Including Stop-and-Frisks — Without Even Looking at Them
==

The department has killed more than 400 cases of alleged misconduct this year that an oversight board had investigated and substantiated.

It’s part of a lax attitude toward discipline under the current #police commissioner, Edward Caban, critics say.

Trump saying he has "concepts of a plan" is hilariously idiotic but it's something we should take literally.

He doesn't have the discipline to draft plans.

That's why the Heritage Foundation (along with 140 people who worked for Trump in the past) wrote Project 2025 for him.

8. Bolivia declared a national emergency due to raging forest fires the country's defense ministry announced last Saturday.

Trump claims he has nothing to do with Project 2025.

Except that all of Trump’s senior staffers wrote it and he took a private jet trip with the head of Project 2025 on the way to a dinner honoring Project 2025 where Trump delivered the keynote speech.

Minor details.

"Over and over, Harris deployed the same formula. She’d answer a question from the moderators on her terms, hitting her marks and making the points she wanted to make. But along the way, she’d make a quick digression: dangling some shiny object for Donald Trump to fixate on.

And time after time, he couldn’t help but take the bait. The result: He was perpetually embroiled in rhetorical dead ends while she was already onto the next thing."

We live in Florida, a state which is in the “likely GOP” column. Our daughter attends college in Pennsylvania, which is shaping up to be an important state for Democratic victory in this election. So our daughter has changed her voter registration to PA.

If you have college age children in battleground states, you might want to have a conversation with them about this idea. Just sayin’.
