@AngelSpeak_client I love the scientific posts on qoto, even though I don't understand most of them. And I love the interesting photos and links. I just can't contribute equally. I am not a Twitter refugee, I have always hated Twitter. But I like a site with real conversations and people sharing interesting stuff. Ravelry is pretty ideal for that, but it's definitely fiber-related and so mostly knitters, crocheters, weavers, spinner, that sort of thing. People who like yarn, who like knowing how ancient people did things, like the creativity. Lots of Ravelry people have migrated to Mastodon, because of abandoning Twitter, and so we are starting to build those relationships and convos we are used to having on Ravelry. Which is a long-winded way of saying I like qoto.

@AngelSpeak_client I guess I'm one of those nonchalants. I joined qoto without really knowing what Mastodon is about. Later I figured out I'm not the right person for this instance. Not a true sciency person, more of a political ranter. So, pretty soon I'll figure out how to move to another instance, the crafty one with all the knitters. I think I'm not the only one who just picked an instance from a list and joined, not knowing much about it at all.

In 1925, Dr. Cecilia Payne completed her PhD thesis, described as “the most brilliant ever written in astronomy.” At a time when few #women entered academia, Payne discovered what the universe is made of. Her work began a revolution in astrophysics.

Dr. Payne-Gaposchkin became the 1st female professor & 1st female department chair at Harvard. Given most of us remember names like Darwin & Newton, we should also celebrate Payne. #science #space

@LucyWinter Non-fiction writer here. I enjoy writing, but writing becomes work, and torture, once you sign a contract and have a deadline. The only way I could be productive was to make myself sit down and write every day, even if I only managed to edit the work from the day before. Usually, though, I'd get in a groove once I started, and I'd get some work done. It's getting started every damn day that is hard.

@lucifargundam As for me, I always leave out the cloves and add more ginger! Ummm, ginger bread. I love it.

@higharchmage Because that oath means nothing to them? Self-interest rules.

@kathygriffin We're fucked, essentially. What a crazy SOB the former president is.

The vicious cycle of monopolization:

1) Corporations argue that their growth is just part of the free market.
2) Use their monopoly power to gouge consumers.
3) Take a portion of their profits to make political donations.
4) Lobby against antitrust enforcement.
5) Repeat.

@knittingknots Me, too. I tried cards, tried a carding machine. I mostly prefer a cat comb. I wound up selling my carding machine because it was such a drag to use it. My cat didn't mind sharing her comb.

@knittingknots I just spent some time recently with my sister at Brookings. We tried to visit every beach north and south of there within a day's drive. So lovely. I miss the beach sometimes. It's a 4-hour drive from here to get to the Oregon coast. I'm closer to the John Day wilderness.

@knittingknots That's great! I made my first drop spindle out of a straight bit of a fallen branch and a cd. I felt so proud! And it worked, which amazed me. I also love washing the dirty wool and combing it. In small amounts, because I live in an apartment. Another rabbit hole I dove into and loved.

@knittingknots That's what I use -- top whorl drop spindles. I get a lot of fun out of making my own with found materials. I scored a huge bundle of 1/4" dowels at a yard sale a few years ago, and I make the whorls out of things like toy wheels, wood coasters, whatever flat roundish kind of thing looks likely. It make it more fun, somehow.

@knittingknots Beautiful! I spin lace weight, too. Otherwise my yarn is lumpy and uneven. But somehow I can produce even lace weight yarn. I like BFL, but I've never tried spinning with Cheviot. I spin with a drop spindle, not coordinated enough to use a spinning wheel.

@knittingknots I've been there! It's fascinating. There's a museum somewhere around there where we watched a scientist working on some tiny fossil. It was amazing, they had a camera in the microscope so we could see what the scientist could see.I'd love to go back and wander around there some more, but the folks I travel with all prefer the beach.

@lucifargundam @rdaily Ah, we Americans will use anything for measurements except metric. Why here in California we measure miles in hours (it's 13 hours to San Diego from here.)

@maxboot You're not telling the whole story. He has at least one child now, and was worried that events could somehow separate him, an American, from his Russian-born child. I don't blame him. He can't go home because he is in danger here more than he is in Russia. It's a sad thing that the US has no room for whistle-blowers, who are real heroes in my mind.

I really like #Knitterspride #knitting accessories. I own many. But this shows you should NOT trust any reviews on their site. I now question the ethics of this company.

They are doing a giveaway and to participate you need to leave a “review” of a product you don’t own on their site. When people question this in the comments, they’re responding that they want people to give their “view of the look and content” of the product.

Not cool.
