@theropologist , I'm 6'3", and 250 lbs. I am a big guy, and can lift heavy things. I have known since I was about 18 that people get scared near me. I didn't understand this until I was older, mid 20s maybe. It changed how I acted around people... instead of being silent, I would tell a joke. I would sit more. I would wear clothing that was less intimidating. I would try to never be alone with anyone. I would smile a LOT more, even if I didn't feel like it.
It is amazing how often the smallest guy in the room would try and challenge me, still, to this day, and how often women will back away.
@flexghost , I strongly urge anyone with an education to flee that state, and a few others. Don't even think about going to college there, in a few years, that degree won't be worth a middle school certificate. Just LEAVE. You know that the climate is changing, that you won't be able to afford insurance for a home that may be wiped out by major hurricanes... Get out while the border is still open.
@NickGates A guy with a lot of issues, and a type of humor that I didn't understand, but obviously a great talent. He will be missed.

This week, I went over to Bluesky and asked people who'd left Mastodon why they left, and lots of people told me. I grabbed the replies and crunched them and wrote up a summary. I think it's really interesting and often kind of wrenching.

My mother wrote a book about poetry, how to read it. She was a teacher for most of her life.
Any ideas on how to self publish it? She isn't interested in making money on the book, she just wants to share her work.

@JoeQuinlan@mastodon.social @gratefuldread I think a significant portion of the USA wants to be a democracy, maybe as much as 2/3rds? While Isreal can't get even 50% in favor of democracy, and maybe as low as 25%.
