🤔The Elizabeth Holmes sentence has uncovered a bunch of secret abolitionists and decarcerators? Am I getting that right?
Or is this another case of "We only notice that things that happen to (innocent!) Black folk every day are horrific when they happen to (guilty!) white folk"
There are 500K people in jail today, locked up in pre-trial detention for up to 4 years! They're disproportionately Black, locked up because they can't afford bail.
@David_Moscrop Working on putting together that advent calendar?
I suppose it’s time for an #introduction. Not much going on here. I’m a native #NewYorker who found his way to an undergrad #Physics degree, thus the handle. I was in Marketing, then had a second career for 18 years as a #HighSchool #PhysicsTeacher, but have found my way back to my first career.
In my free time, I like to point my camera mostly at the sky, dabbling in #Astrophotography but also enjoy a good rocket launch. Occasionally I get a lucky shot, which I’ll post here.
Nothing special.
Since it's #InternationalMensDay, here's a thread of every part of the gynaecological anatomy that is named after a man, with a bit of trivia about each man. Some of the bits are very specific. Before you ask, there are no parts of the gynaecological anatomy named after women...
@atRachelGilmore I got today’s just by thinking about it, no typing!

Our #Introduction: We are an international collaboration of scientists working to detect and study #GravitationalWaves
We made our first observation in 2015, and working with our colleagues in Virgo and KAGRA, have now produced a catalog of gravitational waves from the coalescence of black hole and neutron star binaries
We're currently undergoing commissioning ahead our fourth observing run, when we hope that detections will become an everyday occurrence
We're happy to join #Astrodon
I waited and waited until the unknown woman was in the right spot; I needed her as scale for you to see the size of the chevron folds.
Carboniferous rocks folded during the Variscan orogeny, in Millook Haven, #Cornwall
Been there three times, always in awe.

@jesswade I’m sure you’ve seen it, but there’s a really cool demo where polarized light is shone up through the bottom of a column of glucose solution and viewed from the side. I can’t remember if the view from the side is also through a polarizer but I suspect so. Anyway, you get this cool spiral rainbow effect… You can see it towards the end of this video:
We had some super cool demonstrations of optical rotation (the rotation of the plane of polarisation of linearly polarised light as it passes through a #chiral molecule). Here’s light twisting through sucrose and fructose! 🌀🌈 I’ll paste the tweet to avoid overloading #ScienceMastodon’s servers https://twitter.com/jesswade/status/1593358274052644871
@HalfAdd3r @georgetakei Screwed it up, should have said “goatee.” Ah well

@debarati Totally professional 😄 Love the shirt!
@level98 Ooh, it me. The response time seems to vary - earlier today it was perfectly timed so that I would be tapping a second time *just* as the first took effect. If nothing else, Mastodon encourages you to slow down and take a breath 😄
Retired Chem/Physics/Earth Sciences teacher. I'm interested in everything.
I like a good debate that introduces me to other perspectives. I don't waste much time with people who devolve to name-calling or insults, aside to call them out on it.
I think society performs at its best when we take care of others, especially the weakest among us. That means a strong social safety net, with "free" healthcare, education, and public transit. It's a dream, I know.
30+ years of explaining stuff to teenagers has left me with some habits... I'm not a mansplainer, but I *do* like to find ways to 'splain stuff to receptive ears 😊
I like dogs, cats, and astronomy pictures with a bias towards the shorter wavelengths (kinda leaves out all those lovely Hα pics 😄).
The first thing I look at when shopping for cars is headroom/legroom. Saves a lot of time.
