I've been catching up on @stancarey's sweary blog Strong Language (https://stronglang.wordpress.com/) and I have a belated offering for the May 4, 2021 #music-related post.
"Nashville" by the Old 97s uses profanity beautifully. This song helped me convince a friend who was trying to stop swearing to rethink his goals 😜
"Well I married Caroline
Back in May of '99
It was fucked up at the time
But I figured we'd keep trying"
Those are strong lyrics. Changing an f-bomb; e.g., "It was messed up at the time..." just doesn't evoke the same level of anguish.
Old 97s - Nashville (2014, Most Messed Up)
A few words on alternative platforms you might be considering:
- Tumblr: still exists, now run by Automattic, the WordPress crew -- decent folks. Not my kind of thing but seems to have found its niche, might even interoperate with Mastodon some day.
- Cohost: good vibe, good people, feels small-scale Tumblr-ish. Run by a "not-for-profit software company".
- Post.news: funded by early Twitter investor Andreessen Horowitz. Nonsense micropayment scheme. Avoid.
- Hive: security nightmare. Avoid.
Things I would love to see Mastodon implement (at least on the biggest “main” servers):
1: Integrate “find your friends” from other networks (especially twitter) in onboarding
2: Make following people universal / simpler without having to copy/paste a user’s full handle (should be one click no matter where you are)
3: Give users an *option* to find / discover accounts related to their network (personalized)

“December 25th might signify the birth of Jesus for Christians, but the Winter Solstice is also central to other traditions.”

Just shared over on Counter.Social. I'd have never known this, but I begin to understand why @ct_bergstrom appreciates these animals. This is amazing.

Mediaeval Baebes - Blow, Northern Wind
I love that they're singing in Middle English 😲

Lyrics (with modern translation) are at the YouTube link. According to Heather Teysko of the Renaissance English Podcast this is one of the oldest known songs in English with lyrics dating to about 1200 (https://www.englandcast.com/2014/12/old-music-monday-blow-northern-wynd/).
RIP Angelo Badalamenti, whose music I think about almost every day.
So far (in the past couple years) I've had a handful of really good exchanges with people on the Fediverse. Obviously, I haven't been that frequent of a user. Hosting my own service has helped motivate me to get more involved, and in any case, I've realized that the platform is only as good as who you use it with.
Heavy emphasis on European rather than Indo-, but this is a fun chart from Kenneth Katzner's book The #Languages of the World (new Routledge edition, 1995) #linguistics #words #IndoEuropean
Needless to say, it says a lot about #elonmusktwitter that an algorithm added a sensitive content warning label to my tweet with our live @columbiaclimate #SustainWhat chat just now asking "Can Thriving Online Include Thriving on Mastodon?" https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1OwxWwbgovnxQ
My pronouns are she/her, I follow science, and I support Dr. Fauci.
@elonmusk@twitter.com’s one player (albeit with influence). We must address a much larger global problem of anti-science rhetoric, #disinformation, and #hate.
I haven't done one of these in a while. My friends at Democracy Town introduced me to the Fediverse. We also sought refuge from the bird site.
My bio tells you most of what I'm about and that URL, climatemarch.org is my family.
Here's a trailer to the documentary I played a supporting role in. If it was a movie, I would have been part of the stage crew; low-key and behind the scenes.

Will Musk’s latest antics (targeting Dr. Fauci and mocking inclusivity) reignite the #TwitterMigration to #Mastodon?
Trooper, trucker, sailor, fishwife: What we swear like when we swear like a something.
