Coffee Poll

Had a really long discussion with a friend today about Indian Artisanal Coffee Startups, and I said "nothing beats a good old South Indian Filter Coffee". Which obviously lead to an even longer discussion.

So anyway, poll time, boost for reach.

PS - if you pick option 2, comment with your preferred brand and what method of filtration/preparation do you use?

@mastodonindians

Coffee Poll

@NehaKhazanchi what about filter coffee made with artisanal small batch etc etc. coffee?

Coffee Poll

@vinayaravind I honestly haven't tried any.

The advantage of living in Bangalore I think. Someone's always visiting Coorg or Chikmagalur and comes back with lots of coffee power (those lose packets).

I personally like the local estate mix. Pretty good stuff.

Any good blends/brands you've tried?

Coffee Poll

@NehaKhazanchi oh no no. i am not a coffee aficionado, I just make filter coffee with Cothas in the morning and drink it. I can't be bothered with the artisanal stuff although whatever i've randomly tasted has been very nice.

Coffee Poll

@NehaKhazanchi I can't seem to give up on the bitter #chicory 🤷🏻‍♂️ though I've a moka pot and an espresso machine, it's still the coarse ground 60:40 hotel blend cothas coffee that goes into them or the traditional #coffee filter 😏

Coffee Poll

@prem_k interesting, I feel once you get a taste of that south indian coffee, you pretty much stick to it.

Coffee Poll

@NehaKhazanchi true ... BTW, I drink the non chicory blends too ... Like, Vietnamese coffee that has chocolaty aftertaste. Or adding Monin syrups. Especially the cookies one!

It's the missus who'll divorce me if I give her anything that doesn't have chicory. ☺️

Coffee Poll

@prem_k woah, that sounds super fancy. Had to Google some of that stuff. Gotta admit I'm not that into coffee, just the usual filter coffee I drink. I should get into it and experiment a little more I think.

Coffee Poll

@NehaKhazanchi benefit of being in #Hosur I guess ... I can source from Bangalore, Coorg, Chikmagalur, Yercaud, Ooty and thanks to my wife's work, from Vietnam too. ☺️

BTW, Vietnamese ca phé is quite a shocker to those used to South Indian filter coffee, and best Italian and American coffee styles.

A mini version of top half of South Indian coffee filter sits above a cup full of cold milk maid and the coffee drips directly into it. And you then drink it. 😁

Coffee Poll

@prem_k interesting, I will try the original when I visit Vietnam

Coffee Poll

@NehaKhazanchi I have two coffees a day - 1st one is filter coffee, 2nd one is specialty coffee. Preferred artisanal coffee brand: Kapi Kottai from Chennai.

Coffee Poll

@thesimplecrew oh nice, and how do you make the second one? Same as filter coffee?

Coffee Poll

@NehaKhazanchi I use a hario V60. Occasionally use aeropress.

@NehaKhazanchi
Let me just clarify, I'm not Indian. But I am an insomniac programmer who drinks enough coffee it would cause an elephant to go into cardiac arrest. I like Ethiopian and Sumatran coffees. Honestly, I'm not sure if I've ever had Indian coffee. But when it comes to tea, there is no match for Indian tea, and also Indian recipes for tea. India rules the world in terms of tea. I don't even know what types, they've all been the best. I guess I should try the coffee.. anyone got a recommendation?

@skanman the nicest ones you get in India, and the contraption to make filter coffee too is available here. I'd say when you visit South India, try it.

Coffee Poll

@NehaKhazanchi @mastodonindians

I kinda love both of them.

Want to start grinding my own coffee soon but for now I just make instant coffee from Sleepy Owl for myself in the morning.

And been living in Bangalore for the last 8 months so filter coffee from roadside shops seem great too! Love them! Have 2-3 cups each day. :-)

Coffee Poll

@shibaprasad I see, most of the south Indians I know don't seem to like Sleepy Owl much. I haven't tried it myself.

Coffee Poll

@NehaKhazanchi

If you decide to try it someday, do try the french vanilla or Hazelnut!

Also just remembered a story from your 'South Indians' claim. Once I came across a Tamil gentleman who pointed at the filter coffee I was having and told me it is not the 'original filter coffee'. The Chennai ones are the OG. Never have them though. :-)
