Thank you.

Recently, a group in #indía published a report about how sanitary napkins being sold here have levels of phthalates higher than EU standards (because India apparently doesn't have standards). Several media publications lapped up the findings. It is a question absolutely worth investigating. But there were two problems. One, the group should've double-triple-checked their findings. Because as it turned out, their math had a very basic error, and their findings were incorrect. #mastindia

90% of the time, I'm terrified of being so directionless and YOLO.

10% of the time, I am like yeah I don't know how else to be so might as well enjoy it.

@Memeghnad 😭😭😭 same!

So tired of this permanent existential crisis.

When will I know what I want?!!

@mehluv woah, a lot been going on it appears!

Yeah, it's best to leave all preconceived notions behind and come here, but there's also the problem of how addicted we all are to various social media platforms. That dopamine not hitting immediately is probably making people restless.

This space seems a lot more chilled out, a bit more personal too. It grows on you. I will have to wait to comment on the trolling and harassment levels here (as a woman especially) coz I just got here. But maybe in time the trolls and fascists will get here too 🙂

What happens to you Mastodon account if a server closes down?

Asked this on twitter - I'll ask here - please boost for reach...
(whatever "normal" means for you)

Are you a normal person?

@mehluv where has this been happening? I'm in a quieter part of Mastodon it seems!

We have a way to find #Indians on here. Follow the group @mastodonindians and tag your India-related posts with it.

A group will boost all posts tagged with it to the people who follow it.

And lastly, boost this.

@skrishna I'm new here, so haven't experienced that YET. However, that's a lot of men on the internet IN GENERAL. You can post a personal opinion and there will be some man showing up to tell you WHY your personal is incorrect and they have a better alternative way of opinionating. I think it comes from low self worth and need to feel better about themselves 😏. Quite pathetic really.

When it comes to Mastodon, I’ve had higher than usual unpleasant experiences of men trying to explain things to me or men asking me leading questions so they can explain things to me (usually that thing involves why Mastodon is better than all the others). Has anyone else has that experience?

@deavid A bunch of us are a syndicate that operate a remote telescope in Spain (darker skies and fewer clouds) @ roboscopes.com. This is a widefield rig (California Nebula is about 2.5 degrees across - 5 times the width of the full moon). Think of it as a 400mm telephoto lens on an amateur digital camera. The scope is a Takahashi FSQ106 mounted on a Paramount MX (that controls the pointing). The big disk at the back holds the filters and the red cylinder is the camera. More to say if interested.

Murder, Violence, Indian RW, Violence against Women, Media

@Calamur thanks for saying it out loud. The media coverage of this case has been gory, unnessarily detailed and completely insensitive. With little regard or respect for her family and friends who are probably still in shock and severely traumatised by this ordeal.

I came across a video of the media trying to chase after one of her friends for an interview while he ran away from them. This on a busy street in Mumbai (I think). A pack of 10 men with cameras and mics running after and trying to get hold of the victims friend.

Also, a sudden spike in the number of such "boyfriend/ex/husband/stalker" kills woman type copy cat cases. The Indian media really needs some lessons on how to cover such gruesome murders. It's honestly quite disturbing to watch.

To add to what you said about how this case fits the Hindu Muslim narrative, yes it does, but I don't think it's just that. I read about a woman/labourer from Bihar being killed by her muslim stalker in Chandigarh, which did not recieve the sort of coverage this case has.

For the English speaking lot, as you rightly pointed, we have all seen such relationships around us - where women normalise and internalise being treated like shit; and where mental health issues are largely brushed under the carpet (still). This case hit a nerve for a lot of us - why would an educated and financially independent woman continue to remain in a bad situation? We have however seen this happen several times before in our social circles and we have discussed this endlessly among ourselves.

For the RW however, Shraddha is the poster child for "mummy papa ki baat nahi maanogi toh aisa hi hoga". She is the typical modern liberal woman from a Hindu family, moving away from the trappings of purely religious values. Lips pierced, short hair, wears western clothes, chooses to live life on her own terms and financially independent. It's the sort of behaviour in women that scares a lot of people. Especially considering how many Indian women are more and more 'westernised', opinionated and vocal. It's also the 'your opinions and independent thinking can get you killed' narrative.

I read an article about how an investigation team was sent to Himachal Pradesh to investigate where she had smoked up while she was there on a holiday - presumably to give us a microscopic overview of her 'westernised lifestyle'. I've even come across comments of SM from RW Indian men commenting and implying how happy they were this had happened to her, because this should teach such women a lesson.

I feel as a society our interests peak when such incidents happen to the modern, westernised, English speaking lot. For the same reason the death of Cyrus Mistry brought about a 'compulsory seat belt for the rear seat passengers' rule or the Arushi murder case garnered that much interest.

@UEndesfelder wait, we can follow specific hashtags?

How?

(PS: I'm using the Mastodon App)

Bangalore Weather

This was weather yesterday, and today feels no better! Thanks to rains and a depression in the Bay of Bengal.

If THIS is just what November looks like, I wonder what December and January are about to throw at us? I cannot describe in words how unequipped we are to cope with this!!

@mehluv oh man, that's crazy, but also...who is surprised?

@mehluv unruly? More like extremely toxic. So yes, let's keep the fascists away 🙂

It's shocking how peaceful this place is! It takes a bit of getting used to, but man, my emotional state is that of a far calmer individual now.

has a steady stream of abusive maniacs (and bots) who will find a way to ruin your peace. I mean I once posted about how much I liked Alphonso mangoes and there was a full fledged mango argument in my comments. (I know you're referring to fascists, but I'm saying you can't like mangoes in peace on the bird site). Absolutely demented.
