When Hitler tried to overthrow Germany's government on 11/8/1923, he was arrested 2 days later. He was convicted of treason, and served 9 months of a 5 year sentence. But, as you say, he was not banned from politics. So, 9 years later, he was able to end German democracy and begin the Third Reich.

When Trump tried to overthrow our government on 1/6/2021, nothing happened to him. Neither he nor his co-conspirators suffered any consequences at all.
