For most of my life, I thought that "error" and "err" were just two different spellings of the same word. I didn't realize that "err" was in a different part of speech with a slightly different scope of meaning.

I think your right,
but just so happens it doesn't make a difference in this case or many cases that involve humans because of the wider meanings error has (an action attributable to bad judgment, ignorance, inattention) very similar to err which is perhaps more general in making a mistake or being incorrect / wandering off course.
In this case I'm more right / more specifically correct (by chance) because I meant more specifically the misconception or misjudgment from this amplified when someone hears this and makes it = that
