"Beijing has been relying largely on domestically developed vaccines with a lower efficacy than mRNA shots. Meanwhile, frequent lockdowns have kept businesses closed and pushed up youth unemployment, with China now facing its worst slowdown in decades.
Wary of the high stakes, China’s top leadership earlier this month unveiled plans to “optimize and adjust” the policy to rescue the economy. However, local officials across the country doubled down on restrictions when cases started to rise recently."
"During the weekend, protesters in cities including Wuhan and Lanzhou overturned COVID testing facilities, while students gathered on campuses across China in actions that were sparked by anger over an apartment fire late last week in the far western city of Urumqi that killed 10 people."
"For a political organisation with no greater priority than remaining in power, this is as big a challenge as they come.
The government appears to have drastically underestimated growing discontent towards the zero-Covid approach - a policy inextricably linked to Mr Xi, who recently pledged there would be no swerving from the policy."
“Later we shouted, ‘No nucleic acid tests, we want freedom’ and ‘No to health codes,’” she said. “I felt like finally I could say what I’ve wanted to say.”

"It was unclear why they were so far away, but some said fire engines were blocked by pandemic-control barriers or by cars stranded after their owners were put in quarantine."
"Meanwhile, hopes that Beijing might be signaling a slight softening of its zero-Covid approach – after minor relaxations in some quarantine requirements – are beginning to fade amid an uptick in cases as China heads into its fourth winter of the pandemic..
The government appears to have drastically underestimated growing discontent towards the zero-Covid approach - a policy inextricably linked to Mr Xi, who recently pledged there would be no swerving from the policy."

"In a possible attempt to placate the public, authorities on Saturday announced they had achieved “societal zero-COVID” and restrictions in Urumqi and Korla would be relaxed. The government said taxi, railway, bus and other public services that had been suspended for weeks would resume. State-owned China Southern Airlines announced it would resume flights from Urumqi to four Chinese cities starting Monday."

"Given that China’s leaders were already seeking a way to exit zero-Covid measures, the protests became a way to justify the pivot, said the University of Chicago’s Mr. Yang. They now need to focus on getting more of China’s large elderly population vaccinated, he said"
