Anyone know of a privacy friendly alternative to Kindle?
I was just going to buy one, never register and keep it on airplane mode then sideload books via calibre from my pc but after reading this article I don’t want to run the risk of having all my data still being stored & then sent when i forget to keep airplane mode off

@STORM I'm looking at the Kobo, good for taking notes and uses PDFs well, but no direct experience yet kobo.com/

@buddha_314 @STORM I actually just replaced my Kindle with a Kobo Libra 2. I love the reader, but they also sell your info to third parties & affiliates. *sad face*

@orci @buddha_314 sad too, Kobo isn’t even available to purchase for my country, i might do research into flashing a kindle, maybe I can install lineage OS

@orci @STORM ACK! We can't win! At least it's not Bezos getting rich, I suppose. And you can buy books from indie e-book stores.

@buddha_314 @STORM Totally. That's why I switched to Kobo. I hate the Amazon stranglehold on e-publishing.

@orci @buddha_314 pocket book seems better than kobo, but not available from their site for my country again lol but I’ll look around at local stores if they have it available

@orci @STORM Boox looks really good, but they're very expensive. I want the 10" so I can read journal articles easier boox.com/

@STORM @orci right? the 10" is like $900. And the first book I want to buy on it is $140, so that's a lot of explainin' to do, Lucy.

@buddha_314 @orci :ablobthinking: interesting, never heard of it before! Seems worthy of purchasing definitely but 140 is a lot for me πŸ˜‚ to spend on a single book

@buddha_314 Sadly not available for where I live but I might do research into seeing if its possible to flash lineage OS onto a kindle or something

@orci I'm a bit skeptical of Pocketbook. They say that they use usage data to give you personal recommendations. Personal recommendation sounds like tracking to me.

@STORM

@ilyess @orci I’m skeptical too but its better than kindle & kobo according to mozilla foundation at least and it runs on linux which is a good sign, and id be using it completely offline

@STORM yeah, I gotta admit there aren’t any better alternatives that I know of.

@orci

I own a Pocketbook. As long as you are not online with the Pocketbook there is no way to track anything. You don't need to use their shop.
I download ebooks from different shops to my PC and then upload them to the Pocketbook using Calibre.
For me Pocketbook is still first choice because it can handle virtually any file format. Stay independant of specific dealers.
