@mcp interesting questions rised by a pointless night debate:

1. You can be a moral person without being able to read, but can you be a ethical person without studying ethics at all?

2. Can philosophy have "market vaue"?

@mcp

I'd answer "no" to both questions: people should not seek a marketable skill when studying philosophy and while moral behaviour is intuitive, ethical behaviour requires a kind of awareness that can (almost) only derive from study.

1. The difference between a moral person and a professor of ethics is similar to the difference between a native English speaker and a professor of English. Professors can teach English by grammar and not just by examples because they have theories about the structure of the language.

2. No science can be studied because of its market value, by blurring the boundaries between its object and the marketability of the expertise associated with it, without ceasing to be a science. It is an old question btfp.sp.unipi.it/it/2012/05/la
