Good morning Resisters. I slept in. Last night I got up twice in the middle of the night to fill the woodstove. Plus had 2 electric heaters. 13⁰ wind chill. I can't use the wood furnace. The surgeon who fixed my right hand won't allow lifting of 2 foot rounds I use for that. Another month and I should be okay.

I saw my skunk's son last night. He has very distinctive markings. He is all grown up now. He used to come running when he heard me putting food out. Here is a picture when young.

From "The Analyst":

UKRAINE STRIKES BACK!

The Russians, having drawn in yet more meat for the grinder, began another attempt to take Stepove yesterday. They have to use the same roadways to deliver troops to the front and Ukraine’s artillery forces hammer these on approaching their drop off points. The men then walk to the front. As they do this the Ukrainians make a short tactical retreat, allowing the Russians over the rail lines into the tree lines either side of the devastated hamlet. Suicide drones and artillery then turns the Russians into corpses. The number of bodies, evidenced by extensive video is horrific. Roughly speaking 58 corpses per 100m per attack. Yet again the Russians were wiped out yet they show every intention of trying again.
Being aware that Russian forces were regrouping for wider attacks in Avdivka, Ukraine launched another HIMARS strike on extensive fuel support stores in the Donetsk area - now at least four have been hit and Russian channels are deeply unhappy about how easy and impactful these strikes have been.
Ukraine also deployed Su-25’s to strike a battalion HQ successfully.
On the wider anti-logistics front Storm Shadow reappeared and caused mayhem in Taganrog where the rail line that connects Donetsk and Horlivka enters Russia and is responsible for much of the supply to forces operating around Avdivka.
A mass drone strike also hit the Russian air base near Rostov where at least 20 Su-34M’s are known to be based. Russia always claims to shoot every drone down as a matter of course, but this seems far from true based on limited video.
Conditions on the front remain pretty poor. Dirt roads are mostly deep mud and getting about - especially along the southern front, is more than demanding.
Ukraine may have used its new long range drone on Rostov. These are ugly but hard to detect, cost around $15k and carry a 32kg warhead. They can fly as far as 750km-950km. They also have a nine-unit networking capability to work together during their mission.
Clearly Ukraine has decided the best way of stopping the Russian attacks is prevent them from building up enough material to carry them out as effectively as they would otherwise do.
The Russians and several analysts also thought Ukraine had used all of the StormShadow missiles - frankly I didn’t believe it as their analysis was extrapolation based - and clearly the video shows two such missiles, so they were wrong.
Overall Ukraine seems to be confident in its new approach - cutting the ingredients down means less meat for the grinders and what gets there is easier to deal with and less effective.

Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦!

Russian security forces used a knife to carve the inscription “RF” on the chest of a detained Ukrainian, - Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)

OHCHR has prepared a new report on human rights on the territory of Ukraine, including in settlements occupied by Russian troops.

At least 100 Ukrainian civilians (88 men, 11 women and 1 girl) have died after being detained by Russian authorities since February 24, 2022, according to the report.

"These people died as a result of execution, injuries received during torture, inhumane acts, conditions of detention or lack of medical care,” the document says.

“In one case of torture confirmed during the reporting period, Russian military personnel detained a man in the Kherson region in October 2022 on suspicion of passing information to Ukrainian authorities. While held in two unofficial detention centers, Russian security forces subjected him to prolonged beatings, electric shocks, mock executions, cigarette burns, and mutilation, including carving the letters “RF” into his body with a knife. He was kept in severely overcrowded cells and was denied adequate food and medical care. He was released in May 2023 after seven months of imprisonment,” one example of torture is given in the OHCHR document.

The report states that since 24 February 2022, OHCHR has documented 169 cases of sexual violence in custody. (101 men, 63 women, 4 girls, 1 boy). These rapes, according to the department, were committed by Russian military personnel, law enforcement officers or employees of penitentiary institutions. Rapes are often committed against Ukrainian prisoners of war, the report says. The same cases have been recorded on the Ukrainian side, according to the UN.

“OHCHR documented two cases of conflict-related sexual violence against male prisoners of war, committed by members of the Ukrainian armed forces before their transfer to designated internment sites. These cases occurred before the reporting period. OHCHR also documented one incident of sexual violence against a male prisoner of war that occurred during the reporting period,” the report said.

Separately, UN experts draw attention to the trials of Ukrainian military personnel on the territory of the Russian Federation or occupied territories simply because they served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to the Geneva Convention and international law, “ combatants enjoy combatant immunity and cannot be prosecuted merely for participation in hostilities or for lawful acts of war committed during an armed conflict, even if such acts would otherwise constitute a crime under domestic law " But on at least six occasions between August 1 and November 30, 2023, the Russian-appointed “Supreme Court” of the so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic” sentenced Ukrainian prisoners of war to 22 years or life in prison for membership in the Azov Battalion, the report says.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also raises the issue with the UOC in Ukraine, noting that persecution of members of the UOC often violates the right to freedom of religion.

“On August 7, the Vinnitsa City Court sentenced Metropolitan Jonathan of the UOC to five years in prison <...> During the trial, the defense argued that material evidence was planted during the search. <…> Numerous violations of fair trial principles were recorded in this case,” the UN said.

Forbes did an article on the new Scythe drone. 34 kilo payload and a range of hundreds of kilometers. They are make a hundred a month now and plan to upscale to 500 per month.

IDF spokesperson:

The IDF reveals the largest terror tunnel ever discovered, a project built under the leadership of Muhammad Sinwar in the northern Gaza Strip.

The fighters of the Yalam unit, infantry forces, special units and the engineering forces of the Gaza Division, have been operating in recent weeks as part of an operation led by the Northern Brigade in the Gaza Division, using advanced intelligence and technological means, to uncover, scan and identify a strategic tunnel route of the terrorist organization Hamas which did not cross into the territory of Israel. The ground maneuver, through intelligence operations in the field, provided a lot of information about the terror tunnels project of Hamas, and helped to deepen the knowledge and mapping about it. Since the beginning of the war, as well as these days, the IDF has been working to locate and destroy dozens of attack tunnel routes, as part of the systematic dismantling of Hamas infrastructure.

The IDF has carried out exploration operations in the tunnel and has so far uncovered over 4 km of the tunnel's route, which reaches a maximum depth of about 50 meters.
The nearest shaft of the tunnel is located about 400 meters from the Erez crossing, which was used for the passage of workers, merchants, and patients for medical treatment in Israel in recent years.

The route has several branches and splits which form a wide and branched network of tunnels. Along the route are sewerage, electricity, communication and telephony infrastructures, as well as the top doors which were designed to prevent the entry of IDF forces. The tunnel allows the movement of vehicles inside it and many weapons of the terrorist organization Hamas were found in it.

The tunnel construction project included a team of dozens of terrorists who came especially for its construction from Khan Yunis to the north of the Gaza Strip. In the construction of the tunnel, materials that have not been seen so far in tactical tunnels of the terrorist organization Hamas were used, as well as the use of special digging machines that were smuggled into the Strip. According to estimates, Hamas invested millions of dollars in the underground layout throughout the Strip.

Offensive actions against our forces came out of the tunnel during the fighting in the territory of the Gaza Strip. A few days ago, terrorists were also identified in the tunnel, who were eliminated by the IDF forces.

The Security Service of Ukraine and the Armed Forces of Ukraine successfully attacked an airfield in the Rostov region — the Interlocutor of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the security forces.

"They attacked the airfield with drones. Although the Russian Federation traditionally managed to declare that all the UAVs were shot down, in reality the SBU and the Armed Forces of Ukraine inflicted significant damage on the enemy's equipment."

The interlocutor emphasizes that the airfield was an important target, because the location of the 559th bomber aviation regiment of the Russian Aerospace Forces is located there.

It is known that there were up to 20 SU-34 aircraft, three radar stations and other equipment at the airport at the time of the attack
