Russia continues to recruit Cubans to fight in Ukraine despite opposition from Havana — Bloomberg

Volunteers are enlisting through unofficial channels, and the total number of combatants is likely to be in the hundreds, although exact details are difficult to ascertain, the source said.

Generous payments offered by the Russian military attract impoverished Cubans. Some are also interested in the prospect of obtaining a Russian passport after Russian dictator Vladimir Putin signed a decree in January allowing foreigners to receive citizenship in exchange for military service.

Cuban officials are sending conflicting signals about the war in Ukraine. Hours after Cuba's ambassador to Moscow said in September that the government had no objection to Cuban citizens joining the Russian military, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said Havana's "unequivocal" position was against participation.

After 17 people were arrested in September in connection with an alleged human-trafficking ring that lured Cubans to fight for Russia, the Foreign Office said that "Cuba is not part of the conflict in Ukraine" and would act "resolutely" to stop any recruitment campaigns.

Police explosive experts continue to clear Kherson region of explosive devices under constant Russian fire.

Recently, Russians remotely mined large areas of one of the settlements where people continue to live with PFM anti-personnel landmines.

A fire recently broke out in the area, it caused some mines to detonate, and the remaining mines posed an even greater danger.

The police waited for a "window" in the work of enemy drones, quickly inspected the area and defused the enemy mines.

Germany is confronting a very real threat from the Russian Federation, necessitating a significant increase in the military budget for 2025, as stated by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

The total planned expenses for 2025 are €480.6 billion, with defense expenditures accounting for €53 billion. This marks an increase of €1.25 billion compared to the current year. Pistorius emphasized the need to raise the defense budget by at least six billion euros to adequately address the security challenges posed by Russia.

Germany must protect itself and Baltic partners from Russia, — German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on the deployment of American Tomahawk cruise missiles in Germany

Baerbock defended the agreement with the United States to temporarily deploy Tomahawk and other long-range weapons systems, stating that Putin is “continually expanding the arsenal with which he threatens our freedom in Europe.”

“We must protect ourselves and our Baltic partners from this, in particular by strengthening the means of deterrence. Any other behavior would be not only irresponsible, but also naive in the face of the cold-blooded Kremlin,” the minister said.

Berlin desires different relations with Moscow, but “Putin’s Russia is currently the biggest security threat,” Baerbock emphasized. She noted that in recent years, the Kremlin has been tearing up international agreements in the field of weapons and destroying the pan-European peace architecture. Thus, Moscow “seeks to frighten us, exert pressure, and divide our society,” added the head of the German Foreign Ministry.

The day before, the Russians may have used a new type of drone during their attack on Ukraine, according to Defense Express.

In the morning summary from the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on repelling another air attack, an "unspecified type of UAV" was mentioned alongside Shahed-type attack drones.

An initial image of the wreckage of this new drone surfaced online, showing significant differences from the Shahed-136. The drone reportedly flew at an extremely low altitude of 20-30 meters, suggesting it was likely a kamikaze drone, as per Defense Express.

Defense Express claims to have obtained additional photos from its own sources, showing the downed drone with a possible wingspan of over four meters, beam-like tail fins, a thruster, and a square-profile fuselage. These features might resemble the Russian ZALA 421-20, which has some similar characteristics. However, the ZALA 421-20 is a reconnaissance UAV and is unlikely to fly at such a low altitude. Additionally, such drones are not widely distributed and are unlikely to be in production yet.

Currently, the wreckage of the drone is under investigation to establish the manufacturer and the components used in its assembly.
