In russia, population decline increased by 18% in six months
In russia, in the first half of the year, natural population decline (the excess of deaths over births) amounted to 321,518 people, Rosstat reported.
The number of children born in January-June 2024 decreased to 599.6 thousand from 616.2 thousand for the same period last year.
The number of deaths in the russian Federation in January-June 2024 increased to 921.1 thousand people from 888.7 thousand people in January-June 2023.

The nine hundredth day of large-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine has begun.
During the past day, 114 combat clashes were recorded.
According to detailed information, yesterday the enemy launched a missile attack on the positions of Ukrainian units and populated areas with one missile, 73 air strikes, using 106 air defense systems. In addition, he carried out 4,928 attacks, including 153 from rocket salvo systems.
The aggressor carried out airstrikes, in particular, in the areas of Bytitsa Basivka, Velyka Rybytsa, Kozacha Lopan, Serhiivka, Siversk, Pereizne, Druzhba, Toretsk, Oleksandropil, Grodivka, Myrnograd, Novodonetske, Neskuchne, Pyatikhatky, Novoandriivka and Biloghirya settlements.
Over the past day, the aviation and missile forces and artillery of the Defense Forces made 21 strikes on enemy manpower concentrations, five - on enemy RViA means, and two - on electronic warfare stations.
In the Kharkiv direction , the enemy continued its assault. Six combat clashes took place here. All - in the Vovchansk district.
In the Kupian direction, the number of attacks per day reached ten. The defense forces repelled all enemy assaults near Sinkivka, Berestovo, Glushkivka, and Stelmakhivka.
In the Lymansky direction, our troops repelled 17 attacks by the occupiers in the areas of the settlements of Nevske, Makiivka, Terny, as well as in the Serebryansky forest.
In the Siverskyi direction, the Defense Forces of Ukraine stopped seven assault operations near Beilohorivka, Spirny, and Vyimka.
In the Kramatorsk direction, our soldiers stopped 11 attempts by the enemy to break through the defenses in the areas of Bila Hora, Ivanivsk and Chasovoy Yar. More than 80 percent of all military clashes took place near the latter.
In the Toretsk direction, the enemy launched ten attacks near the settlements of Severnye, Zalizne, Druzhba, New York and Toretsk. He carried out nine airstrikes in one day on Toretsk and the surrounding territories.
In the Pokrovsky direction, our defenders repelled 38 enemy assaults. There were the most of them in the districts of Zhelanne, Grodivka and Vozdvizhenka - ten, eight and five, respectively.
In the Kurakhivka direction, the Defense Forces repelled enemy attacks in the areas of Krasnohorivka, Georgiivka, Paraskoviivka, Karlivka, and Kostiantynivka, where the occupiers tried nine times to break through the defenses of our troops.
In the Vremivsk direction, the aggressor attacked Ukrainian positions three times, in the area of Vodyanyi and from Staromykhailivka and Kermenchyk.
In the Orihiv direction, one combat clash took place near Novodanilivka.
In the Dnieper direction, two attacks by the Russians were not successful.
On the Volyn and Poliske directions, the operational situation has not changed significantly. No signs of formation of enemy offensive groups were detected.
At the same time, our soldiers continue to actively inflict losses in manpower and equipment on the occupying troops, wear out the enemy along the entire line of battle and in the rear.
In general, Ukrainian soldiers neutralized more than 1,220 Russian invaders last day. Also, the enemy lost six tanks, 13 armored combat vehicles, 58 artillery systems, one helicopter, 27 BpLA operational-tactical level, 71 vehicles and 11 units of special equipment .

The Kursk operation may partly serve to further expose the myth of Russia's so-called "red lines," according to an article in Foreign Policy.
In the past, there was intense debate in Washington, Berlin, and the media about possible "red lines" that, if crossed, could trigger a Third World War or nuclear conflict with Russia. One such line was the use of Western weapons to bring the conflict onto Russian territory. However, this has already occurred, writes Andreas Umland, an analyst at the Swedish Institute of International Relations. He argues that the Kursk operation demonstrates the fallacy of these "red lines."
Umland points out that this operation showcases Ukraine's ability to execute unexpected and sudden breakthroughs—something Russia has consistently failed to achieve since the war began. He suggests that Ukraine's strategy may be shifting not just the military dynamics on the ground but also the framework for negotiations—from a "land for peace" agreement to a "land for land" agreement.
This situation, according to Umland, places Putin in a difficult position: losing control over Russian territory is a significant embarrassment for the Kremlin. However, the occupied Ukrainian regions that Putin aims to retain are also part of the "state territory" he is obligated to protect.
Umland concludes that Ukraine's new strategy might enable the "doves" within the Russian leadership—if they exist and have any influence over Putin—to argue for the cancellation of the annexation of these territories to restore Russia's territorial integrity. As long as Ukraine can control Russian territories, there will be mounting pressure on Putin to bring them back under Moscow's control.

Tamara Kolesnyk died as a result of shelling in Mariupol on March 19, 2022. The 90-year-old woman stayed in her apartment until the end, as there was no way to evacuate her from the besieged city.
Tamara Nikolaevna was originally from Russia. She lived in Mariupol for more than 65 years. Here she married a Ukrainian, gave birth to a son. She worked as a school teacher.
"Grandma loved this land, Ukraine, with all her soul. She had a big heart and at the same time was strict and persistent in teaching children," said granddaughter Maria.
Tamara Kolesnyk is survived by her son, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
🥹🐈 Rescuers of the State Emergency Service rescued the kittens after the fire.
During the liquidation of the consequences of the fire in the destroyed building, the Ukrainian rescuers heard sounds from the basement. They found and rescued four kittens who were successfully returned to their cat mother.

RUSSIAN RAILWAYS ‘NEAR COLLAPSE’
Russia is a country that is highly reliant on its rail systems. They are the means by which large quantities of anything are moved around the country.
The war has strained the railways to breaking point, with some 50% of railway stock being used for military purposes getting equipment to the front.
This hampers the available transport for domestic and industrial use. That in turn, forces the system to cut back on maintenance and reduce down times to maximise the availability of rolling stock.
That level of constant pressure eventually results in higher degrees of wear and tear which of course, happens more quickly, requires more maintenance and so it goes on.
Add to that the increased activity of Ukrainian agents in Russia and the increasing pressure from partisan attacks.
Things have become so bad that a remarkable recording of the deputy director of Russian Railways has come out. In it he berates the regional directors for failing to do anything about anything outside of their mediate areas, they weren’t operating in support of each other and the lack of communication and cooperation was unacceptable.
Now to be fair this is how Russia works. You do your job in your area and that’s that. You wouldn’t dare interfere in someone else’s so the whole concept of working with each other is simply not done.
However the deputy director is clearly minded to change things - so much so that he actually told the regional directors that if they carried on ignoring each other and didn’t help their neighbouring regions he would have them all ‘lined up and shot’. So now we’re back to soviet era methods of motivation!
His read on the state of the rail system and its rolling stock was harsh. The partisan damage is also clearly an issue for them. As many as two or three major derailments have been happening each week. These are incredibly hard to manage, expensive to fix, require specialised equipment to clear and repair. Then there’s the loss of valuable rolling stock and repairing the lines.
Of course this is also more complex in Russia. The distances involved mean that it can take an age to get to a derailment in a remote area. That blocks entire rail lines in key areas - often for days at a time with knock-on consequences.
Appreciating that Russia is so dependent on rail infrastructure, hearing the level of panic in the senior most managers of the system, shows you quite how bad things have become. Far more than perhaps we have ever truly appreciated.
Just another part of the structure of Russian systems that is already creaking under the weight of lack of money, over use, and poor maintenance. Never mind the over centralised system and lack of initiative.
