⚡️Russia denies reported indirect negotiations with Ukraine to halt energy strikes.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova denied on Aug. 18 a report that the country was entering indirect talks with Ukraine in Qatar on mutually halting strikes on energy infrastructure.
The Washington Post (WP) reported on Aug. 17, citing undisclosed official sources, that Russia was preparing to enter secret indirect talks with Ukraine - facilitated by Qatar - to mutually stop attacks on energy infrastructure. According to the WP, Ukraine's incursion into Russia disrupted plans for those indirect talks.
In response to the report, Zakharova claimed that "no one broke anything off because there was nothing to break off."
"There have been no direct or indirect negotiations between Russia and the Kyiv regime on the safety of civilian critical infrastructure facilities," Zakharova said.
⚡️Incursion into Kursk Oblast could 'change the tide' for Ukraine, US Senator says.
During an interview on CBS' Face the Nation on Aug. 18, U.S. Senator Mark Kelly said that Ukraine's incursion into Kursk Oblast could help Ukraine change the course of the war in the country's favor.
Referring to Ukraine's incursion into Kursk Oblast, Kelly said that he believes "the Ukrainians have done something unforeseeable that could really change the tide of how this conflict’s gonna play out," noting that over 130,000 Russians have been forced to evacuate regions near the border.
When asked if the Arizona Senator was "comfortable" with Ukraine using U.S.-provided weapons in Kursk Oblast, Kelly replied: "I am at this point."

Lukashenko claims Ukraine would be "very happy" if Russia used nuclear weapons
According to Ukrainska Pravda, Alexander Lukashenko, the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, "stated that if russia utilised nuclear weapons, Ukraine would be "very happy" because the Kremlin would no longer have any allies."
"The worry is that escalation on Ukraine’s part is an attempt to force Russia to take asymmetric actions. Let's consider the usage of nuclear weapons. I am confident that Ukraine would be pleased if Russia or we utilised tactical nuclear weapons there. That would bring them joy"

Lukashenko claims that utilising nuclear weapons would deprive Russia and Belarus of allies.
"Then we'd probably have few allies left. In general, there would be no sympathetic countries left. Because they are involved in what is happening," said Lukashenko.
"Second, it's nuclear weapons. We have already formed a certain image negative to these nuclear weapons. So they want to push [us to do it – ed.]," the Belarusian leader added.
