Today, Kyiv unveiled the country’s main Christmas tree on St. Sophia Square.

This year, as in previous years, the tree was funded entirely by private sponsors. The 15-meter artificial tree is adorned with a 2-kilometer-long light-blue garland and decorated with 2,000 turquoise ornaments.

However, there will be no large-scale events, markets, or other festivities on the square this year.

Pro-democratic parties called on citizens to go on a general strike, and to their companies to give them paid leave.

We call on Georgian citizens to demand paid leave as provided for by the Labor Code, the pro-democratic opposition parties said in a statement.

"The political parties that won the elections on October 26, 2024,
call on Georgian citizens to exercise their right to paid leave, as provided for by the Labor Code, and to use this free time to participate in the nationwide resistance movement.
To Georgian companies that value Georgia's freedom, independence and democracy, we ask you to provide your employees with such leave during these crucial days and support their peaceful struggle for Georgia's European future.

Our fight is fair, and we will definitely win!" the statement reads.
