Dear Elected Representative,

It is right to stand by Ukraine in this war. It is a situation of unusual and absolute moral simplicity.

Ukraine was attacked in violation of international law, and is defending itself. Russian occupiers in Ukraine commit war crimes, which cease only when territory is liberated. Russian propagandists say outright the goal of the elimination of the Ukrainian nation and people. The stated goal is genocide.

And we as a nation have done well by supporting Ukraine. It is a situation of unusual strategic gain and puts American interests first by having a debilitated and defeated Russian Federation on Europe’s and NATO’s borders, as well as having a resource rich Ukraine grateful for our support. This is in addition to the simple moral imperative, and the assistance assurance noted in the Budapest memorandum.

Ukrainians are fulfilling the entire NATO mission by themselves, absorbing and halting a full-scale Russian attack, an attack that is unequivocally in violation of  the following promises made by the Russian Federation in 1994:

• Respect the signatory's independence and sovereignty in the existing borders.
• Refrain from the threat or the use of force against the signatory.
• Refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by the signatory of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind.

Ukrainians are deterring a Chinese offensive in the Pacific by demonstrating how difficult such an operation would be, and by continuing to provide Ukraine with unwavering and increasing military and humanitarian assistance, we provide the ultimate deterrence to Chinese military aggression in the region. This again puts American interests first.

With their blood sacrifice, the Ukrainian people are defending the notion of an international order governed by law and rules, making war and American intervention elsewhere less likely.
And there is an important way that doing right and doing well come together.

Ukraine was attacked as a democracy, and is defending itself as a democracy. It is historically unusual for a dictatorship to try to destroy a democracy by force. That Putin's Russia is trying to do so reminds us that we are at an historical turning point. On one side of the scale are Russia's ruthlessness, barbarism, and resources. On the other side are Ukrainians' sacrifice and our support. Their sacrifice will be enough, keeping American sons and daughters, mothers and fathers from their sacrifices in death and hardship, if our assistance will be enough to ensure the defeat at the hands of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Historians will look back at these two years of war and marvel at how much the Ukrainians did for their allies. I expect they will describe this turning point for what it was, including its moral dimension and your response.

What can't be predicted is which way matters will turn, since that depends upon you and what you do in the next few days. We have an unusual chance to do well by doing right. Will we take it?

Sincerely,

Approved Russian government rules on the confiscation of passports for Russians who have been restricted from leaving the country have come into force today. The regulation was published on November 24 and signed by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

According to it, Russians must, within five days after receiving notification of restriction of exit, hand over their passports for storage to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, or to the state organization that applied such a restriction on them.

Such a ban, according to the law 114-FZ, may be imposed on people who have access to state secrets and "information of special importance"; when being sent to military service; when serving in the FSS; if a citizen is a suspect, accused in a criminal case; convicted; does not fulfill obligations (debts) imposed by the court; recognized bankrupt or provided false information when applying for a passport. In addition, according to the amendments in force since April, exit is closed for those who have been sent a summons to the military enlistment office.

When handing over a passport, an acceptance certificate is drawn up in two copies, one of which is given to the citizen in hand, and the other remains with the authorized body.

Passports are returned after the travel restriction is lifted or if the document handed over for storage has expired.

This is taking Russia back to the Soviet times when going abroad was virtually impossible for most citizens.

Next step would be making Russiabs to obtain permissions from the government to even receive passports to go abroad.

Inside Ukrainian drone school teaching pilots to target Russian forces - Forces News

Ukrainian officials have given Forces News rare access inside a centre that is training hundreds of people to fly the cheap kamikaze drones that have been used to great effect against their Russian opponents.

Drones have become a vital weapon of the war, supplementing regular artillery, and volunteers have set up drone schools across the country to teach soldiers and civilians how to fly them.

Hundreds of men and women are being taught how to use small, cheap uncrewed aerial vehicles to seek and destroy Russian targets, wearing a headset that lets them see what the drone is seeing.

A Ukrainian soldier says he stopped shelling small Russian units because he is running out of US-made artillery ammo - Business Insider

A Ukrainian soldier said he stopped shelling small Russian units because his brigade was running out of US-provided artillery ammunition, per The Times of London.

"When it's two or three soldiers, I'm not shooting any more; only when it's a critical situation, say, ten guys close to our infantry, we will work," Sergeant Taras "Fizruk" told the newspaper.

The 31-year-old mortar gunner said that he and his comrades from the 47th Mechanized Brigade "had ten times more ammunition over the summer." per the newspaper.

"American rounds come in batches of almost identical weights, which makes it easier to correct fire, with very few duds. Now we have shells from all over the world with different qualities, and we only get 15 for three days. Last week, we got a batch full of duds," said the soldier.

The lack of shells, Fizruk said, has hampered his unit's control over the northern flank of Avdviivka in eastern Ukraine and their ability to shoot at Russian troops.

"We should be controlling our sector from 4km away, so we can kill a few hundred Russian soldiers before they get to our infantry, and we only take a few wounded," he told the newspaper, adding: "But without ammunition, we can't."

The US and NATO allies have struggled to keep up with Ukraine's demands for artillery shells and ammunition, with Western ammunition stockpiles depleting.

Ukrainian forces have been burning through artillery shells and ammunition at a rate of about 7,000 rounds a day, according to figures from Estonia's defense ministry.

And Western supplies are now at the "bottom of the barrel," Admiral Rob Bauer of the Netherlands, who chairs NATO's Military Committee, said at a Warsaw Security Forum meeting in October.

"We need large volumes. The just-in-time, just-enough economy we built together in 30 years in our liberal economies is fine for a lot of things — but not the armed forces when there is a war ongoing," he said, per the BBC.

The issue has been compounded by Republicans in Congress, who are threatening to withhold crucial aid to Ukraine, including ammunition, a defining element in frontline combat.

Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukraine's presidential office, said that Congress' delay in providing aid to Ukraine would "very likely make it impossible to continue liberating territory and create a high risk of losing the war," per The New Voice of Ukraine.

The front as of the end of the day on December 12, 2023 - DeepState

▶️ Bilomoskovskyi, Siverskyi and Bilhorodskyi sections - no changes.

▶️ Svativskyi section - the enemy has once again regained positions near Ivanivka, they keep changing hands. Katsaps advanced on Sinkivka and in Serebryanske forest, fighting continues.

▶️ Bakhmut direction - south of Bakhmut in the dachas, the enemy was successful. Fighting continues for height 215.7, the Defense Forces are still managing to hold their positions, although the enemy has taken a large part of the trenches nearby. The 24th Brigade liberated the spoil heap of the Gagarin mine.

▶️ Avdiivka section - over the past three days the enemy has been conducting assault operations in at least 16 places near Avdiivka. Unfortunately, the enemy has captured the outskirts of the city, fighting is taking place between Yasynuvata Lane and Kolosova Street. The Avdiivka bridge is located at an elevated position relative to the city itself, so its loss will negatively affect the operational and tactical situation of neighboring units. Fighting continues near Nevelske. Katsaps captured the southern part of Maryinka. In addition, the enemy was successful south of Maryinka and north of Novomykhailivka. South of Novomykhailivka, the enemy is conducting assault operations, fighting continues.

▶️ Berdiansk section - no changes.

▶️ Zaporizhzhia section - the enemy attacks south and west of Robotyne, has partial success.

▶️ Tavria section - no changes.

🗂 Analytical note. The situation along the entire contact line is simply disastrous. Compared to Maryinka and Bakhmut, Avdiivka still demonstrates stability. If we do not work on the mistakes, it will be very painful, if it is not too late.
