Russian tanker carrying 100,000 tons of oil loses control off German coast

A 248-metre tanker from the Russian "shadow fleet" has lost control in the Baltic Sea north of the island of Rügen. The vessel, drifting off the coast of Germany, has 99,000 tonnes of oil on board, BILD reports , citing the German Maritime Rescue Service.

The tanker Eventin flies the flag of Panama and is 18 years old, the publication clarifies. It loaded oil in the Russian port of Ust-Luga and set out on a voyage to the Egyptian port of Said on January 6.

According to BILD, the vessel is part of the so-called shadow fleet of the Russian Federation, which Russia uses to circumvent Western sanctions imposed in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Eventin was launched in 2006 under the Norwegian flag under the name Storviken. In 2022, the vessel was registered in Panama as Charvi and received its current name in June 2024. The owner of the tanker is unknown. As journalists found out, Charvi belonged to a company based in Dubai, which was founded in 2022 and liquidated in March 2024.

🔥In Engels, Russia, at the oil depot hit by Ukrainian drones the situation is deteriorating. The fire continues and has reportedly spread to other tanks.

Over the past 24 hours, firefighters have tried to use foam to stop the fire with no success. Now, they are reportedly expecting reinforcements and other equipment to arrive from neighboring regions and will try again. If the attempt is not successful, they are simply planning to let the oil reserves burn out.

The oil refinery stored kerosene fuel used by the Russian Air Force stationed at the airfield nearby. The bombers and fighter jets from Engels are routinely used in Russia’s attacks on Ukraine. Reportedly, the airfield is already experiencing a fuel shortage.
