NATO has confirmed the incursion of Russian fighter jets into Estonia — Ukraine and the EU have condemned the act.
Alliance spokeswoman Alison Hart said NATO reacted immediately and intercepted the Russian aircraft. In her words, this is “yet another example of Russia’s irresponsible behaviour and of NATO’s ability to respond to such actions.”
The incident also drew responses across Europe. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X that Europe will “respond decisively to every Russian provocation by investing in strengthening the eastern flank.”
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called the violation of Estonian airspace by Russia “an extremely dangerous provocation.”
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the incursion of fighters into Estonian airspace is “another escalation by Russia and a direct threat to transatlantic security.”
“Ukraine stands with Estonia in the face of Russia’s brazen intimidation. I agree with my Estonian colleague Margus Tsahkna that half-measures are no longer enough. Russia must face crushing political and economic pressure,” said Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha.
